Chelsea’s decision to part ways with Enzo Maresca after a string of drab performances have sent ripples in the soccer world since New Year’s Day. And, Chelsea icon John Terry has also been affected by the development at the Stamford Bridge outfit.
John Terry Left Shocked by Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea Exit
Following Chelsea’s announcement of Maresca’s departure earlier this Thursday, Terry took to TikTok and revealed his surprise over the former Leicester City manager’s shock exit.
“Enzo Maresca has just been sacked by Chelsea and to be honest, I’m completely shocked, I didn’t see it coming. Just my opinion from afar, there’s clearly been tension between the manager and the owner and they’ve come to this decision. It’s a big shock because rewind three or four weeks ago and we were playing so well against Barcelona,” Terry said (via Metro).
“I think like the squad, the manager is inexperienced himself. It was his first full-time job in the top-flight and he has said how he’s still learning and how he’s got some things wrong at times. But I will say there’s always two sides to the story and there’s certainly things behind the scenes that I don’t know about. I just hear rumblings like everyone else does,” Terry added.
Terry, who helped Chelsea notch five Premier League titles between 1998 and 2017, added, I’m disappointed but there’s still loads to play for this season, Champions League, Carabao Cup, so whoever comes in has a lot to play for. As players, you have to get on with it and step up an deal with it.”
The Blues, fifth in the Premier League table now, have named Under-21s head coach Calum McFarlane as their interim head coach. They are expected to appoint a new manager soon.

Who Is the Top Contender for Chelsea Head Coach Role?
According to BBC, RC Strasbourg head coach Liam Rosenior has emerged as the top choice for the Chelsea role recently left vacant by Maresca. The 41-year-old Englishman, who used to play for Fulham and Hull City, is believed to have big admirers in the Blues’ hierarchy.
Rosenior, a former full-back, has been Strasbourg’s head coach since July 2024. He guided his team to a seventh-place Ligue 1 finish last campaign, helping them qualify for the UEFA Conference League. He has overseen 32 wins in 62 overall matches in charge of the club.
With Strasbourg also owned by Chelsea owners BlueCo, he could actually replace Maresca.
