Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami are reportedly close to adding ex-Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid star Sergio Reguilón, with Jordi Alba retiring after the end of the Herons’ ongoing season.
Reguilón, who will turn 29 later this month, is currently without a club after being released by Tottenham Hotspur earlier this summer. The six-cap Spain international appeared in six games across all competitions for the Premier League side in the 2024-25 season, starting just two of them.
When is Sergio Reguilón Expected to Join Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami?
According to MARCA, via The Mirror, Sergio Reguilón is considered Inter Miami’s primary target ahead of the January transfer window. The 28-year-old has been identified as a potential successor to Jordi Alba and could soon be announced as a member of the Herons.
Reguilón, who spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Manchester United, has not featured at the senior level since May. However, the report notes that the former Sevilla left back has been training rigorously on his own to maintain match fitness.
During his tenure at Tottenham Hotspur from 2020 to 2025, the Spaniard made 73 appearances across all competitions, scoring twice and providing nine assists under manager Thomas Frank.
According to MARCA, Reguilón’s arrival as Alba’s replacement is considered a done deal.

Inter Miami Chief Recalls Experience of Signing Lionel Messi
Inter Miami chief business officer Xavi Asensi has recently opened up on his experience of facilitating the deal to get Lionel Messi at Chase Stadium in 2023. Showering special praise on the Argentine, he pointed out how his club’s popularity subsequently rose.
“When we arrived here in 2020-21 with owners Jorge Mas, [his brother] Jose Mas and David Beckham in charge, the main goal was to win on the pitch. I would say Lionel Messi is the greatest of all time, subjectively and objectively. So obviously, having the best player possible in your roster is a no-brainer,” Asensi said (per BBC).

“This is what we’ve been trying to do from the very beginning. Not just bring in big-name players, but bring in the best players possible so the team on the pitch is something we can be proud of and one that wins,” the former Barcelona chief commercial offer remarked.
Asensi recalled signing Messi at Inter Miami, commenting, “Overnight, we went from being an MLS club to a club that I would say everybody knew. Every outlet in the world, everyone talked about it. Crazy. From Fiji to Anchorage, Patagonia to Mongolia, it put Inter Miami into the big time.”
Messi, 38, extended his Inter Miami contract until December 2028 earlier this year.
