Inter Miami finally won its long-awaited MLS Cup title in 2025, a goal set in motion at the start of its rebuilding process with the arrivals of Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez. With the 2025 season concluded, the club’s current objective is to bring in new reinforcements to add depth to the squad. However, their first attempt in the most recent transfer window appears to have been unsuccessful.
Nicolás Fonseca Prioritized LaLiga over Inter Miami
According to information released by Super Deportivo (via Marca), Inter Miami has formalized an offer to sign Nicolás Fonseca, one of the top midfielders in Liga MX in 2025 and a star player for Club León. However, the group controlled by Grupo Pachuca has rejected the American club’s offer.
This decision was made jointly with Fonseca’s representatives, who have made it clear that his priority is to transfer to European football. Additionally, the offer was deemed insufficient in financial terms, with Grupo Pachuca seeking to profit from a multi-million-dollar transfer. This closes the door on a possible reunion between the midfielder and Messi for now.

Initially, the possibility of a transfer to Inter Miami, where the midfielder could have gained greater visibility playing alongside Messi, was considered. However, greater weight was ultimately given to the opportunity to play in Europe. Consequently, a loan deal is now in place with Real Oviedo, allowing him to compete in the competitive LaLiga environment.
Fonseca had attracted interest from Spanish clubs prior to Inter Miami’s formal offer. Club León had reached an agreement with Valencia CF earlier in 2025, but that deal fell through at the last minute due to bureaucratic issues before the transfer window closed. The midfielder caught León’s attention after shining for River Plate, becoming one of the current Mexican champions’ key signings ahead of the Club World Cup. FIFA subsequently excluded the club due to rules on multiple club ownership, which affected Grupo Pachuca.
Club León finished second-to-last in the standings, ahead of only Puebla, in its first season in the Apertura Tournament, but its performance still attracted positive attention.
Fonseca’s Main Tactical Characteristics
Also playing in the defensive midfield position, Fonseca is a box-to-box player with good game-reading skills, performing well in both ball recovery and midfield progression. His career involves adapting to different tactical environments. Fonseca plays mainly as a central defensive midfielder, standing out with simple runs distributing short passes to maintain possession and transition.
Fonseca recovers the ball well (winning many tackles and recoveries), joins intermediate pressure lines, and tries to cut off opposing passing flows. Finally, he maintains positional stability and reads the game tactically, preventing collective disorganization when his team loses possession.
