Inter Miami Transfer Rumors: Lionel Messi-Led Side Eyeing Up Move For USMNT International

Lionel Messi's Inter Miami have earmarked a former CF Montreal player as a potential new signing ahead of the 2026 season.

Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami are believed to be on a mission to further strengthen their squad following last month’s Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup glory. And, they are reportedly keen to add a United States men’s national team (USMNT) player to their ranks soon.

So, who is the mystery USMNT player Inter Miami have been impressed with of late?

Lionel Messi’s Team Contact Argentine Outfit for USMNT Star

According to transfer journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, Inter Miami are interested in permanently signing Huracan midfielder Matko Miljevic ahead of the start of the 2026 season. They have approached the Argentine club to enquire about the star, but are yet to table a formal bid.

Milijevic, who was born in Miami, United States in May 2001, relished a fine maiden season at Huracan last year. After arriving on a free transfer, he scored eight goals and contributed as many assists in 42 appearances across all competitions for the Argentine outfit in 2025.

Prior to joining Huracan, Milijevic represented Argentinos Juniors, CF Montreal, and Newell’s Old Boys, Messi’s boyhood club. The 24-year-old’s two-year-long stint at Montreal saw him make 35 appearances and post four goal involvements in the MLS between 2021 and 2023.

Should Milijevic join Messi’s current club, he would likely establish himself as a vital starter for them. He would operate either in a number 10 role or as a left-sided inverted winger.

Inter Miami Star Opines on Having Messi As Teammate

During a recent chat with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter Miami star Yannick Bright asserted that Messi is both a modest individual and an inspirational leader in the dressing room.

“Leo is a very humble person with an incredible aura. I remember the first time I saw him, I almost fainted, even though I had tried to mentally prepare myself before his arrival. He presented himself as just another person; he’s a leader on and off the pitch, always finding the right words to motivate us before matches. He’s a model professional, with obsessive attention to detail,” the Italian midfielder said.

Bright added, “He’s a quiet guy, but on the pitch, he transforms into an animal. At 38, after all he’s won, he never wants to lose, not even in training. In the locker room, he has an excellent relationship with the entire team. We have a good relationship as teammates. We talk a lot about football, he tells me about his family and asks me about mine. He’s been a great help, both on and off the pitch.”

Messi, who turned 38 last June, has helped Inter Miami win the MLS Cup, MLS Supporters’ Shield, and Leagues Cup since completing his Bosman move in the summer of 2023.
