The on-air friction between Fox Sports soccer analysts Zlatan Ibrahimović and Alexi Lalas has become one of the unexpected storylines of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Every pregame and postgame episode seems to produce one awkward exchange after another between the pair, to the point where many have begun wondering whether the two genuinely dislike each other.
Andrew Marchand Labels Alexi Lalas ‘One of the Most Insufferable Analysts in American Sports History’
Before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Fox Sports assembled a star-studded studio panel, adding former Sweden striker Ibrahimović to a team that already included anchor Rebecca Lowe, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, and former USMNT defender Lalas.
Putting Ibrahimović and Lalas on the same desk was always a risky proposition.
One built a career on supreme confidence, and an ego so large it became part of the “Zlatan” act. Even before joining Fox’s World Cup coverage, Ibrahimović famously declared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live”: “A World Cup without me wouldn’t be a World Cup.”
Meanwhile, Lalas has spent years cultivating a reputation as one of soccer’s most outspoken and provocative pundits, earning comparisons as “the Skip Bayless of soccer.” Put the two personalities together, and fireworks were almost inevitable.
Just one week into the tournament, that’s exactly what has happened.
Not everyone has been a fan of the drama, though. In a scathing review of Fox’s World Cup coverage, The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand argued the network would be better served leaning more heavily on Lowe and Henry rather than the much-talked-about Zlatan-Lalas subplot.
“To Zlatan’s credit, he is not working in his native language,” Marchand wrote and then joked that, “on many occasions, we wish Lalas had never learned English, especially in his chosen dialect of ‘Hot Take.'”
Then came the brutal verdict. “He is one of the most insufferable analysts in American TV sports history,” Marchand wrote of Lalas.
The veteran media columnist also mocked Fox’s “Alexi’s Power Rankings” segment after Lalas reminded viewers that if they disagreed with his rankings, they should create their own. “How about no ‘Power Rankings’? This is not ‘First Take,'” Marchand responded.

The tension between the Swede and the former USA defender appeared to boil over earlier this week following France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal. After Lalas described Les Bleus’ first-half display as “arrogant,” Ibrahimović pushed back, and not very nicely.
“It’s not arrogance. It’s confidence,” the Swedish legend replied. “Ignorant people will say it’s arrogance. Intelligent people will say it is confidence.” Co-panelist Henry’s stunned reaction went viral.

The incident was hardly isolated. Earlier in the tournament, Lalas sparked another memorable exchange when he told Ibrahimović to his face that Norway striker Erling Haaland could eventually surpass the Swede’s standing in the game with a strong World Cup campaign.
“If this man has a big World Cup, boom, right to the top, even over this guy,” Lalas said. “I love you, Z, but I will take Haaland over you in terms of legendary status.”
For a man who has famously referred to himself as a “lion,” a “god,” and once declared, “I am playing to win. To win, I will destroy you,” Ibrahimović is never going to let comments like Lalas’ slide without a response.
With more than a month left in the tournament, viewers can probably expect plenty more exchanges between the two. The pair will be back on screens when the United States face Australia in a crucial Group D clash today, with kickoff scheduled for 3 p.m. ET at Lumen Field in Seattle.
