Mohamed Salah sent shockwaves through the soccer world with an explosive interview targeting Liverpool’s leadership. Now, Manchester United icon Gary Neville is drawing a direct parallel between the Egyptian star’s actions and the messy exit of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Why Does Gary Neville See Shadows of Ronaldo in Salah’s Actions?
With reports swirling that Salah could soon leave Anfield, Neville offered his candid take on the situation. The former defender suggested the Liverpool forward is following a similar playbook to the one Ronaldo used when forcing his way out of Old Trafford.
“I wouldn’t see it from an ordinary player’s side. But when you have this level of player that’s almost the best in the world, which I’d put Mo Salah up there with, you sometimes… not have to accept what he’s done because Cristiano Ronaldo did it (in 2022) and I didn’t take to it too kindly at all because I think those players have an expectancy to bring everybody along with them,” Neville told Sky Sports.
Neville, an eight-time Premier League winner, noted that superstars often operate differently than their teammates.
“But it is not unusual behaviour for a player of that level of quality and talent. They often have a different outlook on things. It’s easy for me when it’s at Liverpool because I can sit back and relax a little bit. I wouldn’t like it if it was at my club Manchester United and I didn’t a few years ago when Cristiano did it and he went and did the big interview,” he said.
Ronaldo dominated headlines in November 2022 after publicly criticizing Manchester United during an interview with Piers Morgan. After stating he had no respect for then-manager Erik ten Hag, the Portuguese legend left for Al-Nassr on a free transfer in January 2023.

Liverpool prepares to face Brighton & Hove Albion on Dec. 13, and head coach Arne Slot insists he wants his star winger to stay.
“I have no reasons not to want him to stay. This club has won a lot of games with him,” Slot responded when asked about the transfer rumors.
Despite the noise off the pitch, Salah remains a central figure for the Reds, though he has missed three of Liverpool’s last four matches. The 33-year-old has played in 71 games across all competitions under the guidance of Slot. Since the start of the 2024-25 campaign, he has bagged 39 goals and laid out 26 assists.
