Fans Salute ‘Messi Effect’ As Inter Miami Confirm Deal To Sign 29-Year-Old Former Tottenham Star

Lionel Messi's Inter Miami completed the signing of a former Tottenham Hotspur defender earlier on Monday, Dec. 15.

Major League Soccer (MLS) club Inter Miami roped in a former Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid man on a free transfer earlier this Monday. And fans have expressed their thoughts about the Herons’ recent deal, with some claiming Lionel Messi to be an influential factor.

So, who is Messi’s new teammate, and what did fans have to say about the latest signing?

Fans Credit Lionel Messi Following Inter Miami’s Latest Transfer

Inter Miami confirmed on Monday that Sergio Reguilon will join the club on a two-year deal. The 29-year-old left-back, who will replace Jordi Alba in the Herons’ starting lineup, is set to claim one of his team’s Designated Player slots next year.

Following Inter Miami’s announcement on their official website, a host of fans have reacted to Reguilon’s move to the Messi-led outfit. A soccer fan suggested that Messi was crucial to Inter Miami’s latest transfer, writing on X: “Messi effect strikes again. Miami collecting fullbacks like Pokémon. Big move for MLS.”

Tottenham released Reguilon, who has relished loan spells at Manchester United and Atletico Madrid in the past, earlier in June. Analyzing his free transfer to the Herons, one supporter posted on X: “Reguilón choosing Inter Miami shows how MLS is attracting top talent with real ambition. A proven left-back adds quality and depth to the champions, exciting move for both the club and the league.”

A soccer fan lauded Inter Miami, which also recently signed Rodrigo De Paul on a permanent deal, for their ambitious transfer strategy. He wrote on X: “Miami keeps stacking names like it’s FIFA career mode. Sunny weather, big checks, zero hesitation.”

On the other hand, one Tottenham supporter backed Reguilon to shine in the MLS following six months of inactivity. He commented on X: “(He) was one of the best LBs in the Premier League, go cook the MLS brother.”

During his five-year stint at Tottenham from 2020 to 2025, Reguilon made 73 appearances across all competitions. The Spaniard found the back of the net two times and laid out nine assists for Spurs after arriving from Real Madrid.

Another soccer fan reacted to the Bosman move, posting on X: “This makes sense for both sides. Miami needed a reliable left-back after Alba, not another headline name, and Reguilón brings pace, experience, and immediate fit at 28.”

With Reguilon and De Paul’s respective futures already secured, Messi’s side are reportedly expected to move on to other targets. They are said to be keen to turn Tadeo Allende’s loan from Celta Vigo permanent and could also offer Luis Suarez a contract extension soon.

Reguilon Claims He Is Keen To Succeed at Messi’s Side

After signing a contract until December 2027, Reguilon asserted that he joined Inter Miami to contribute to their continuing success in the North American league.

“It’s a very ambitious project, a winning club that is doing things the right way, and that’s what attracted me: coming here to keep winning and competing. My objective is to keep winning, go after the trophies we’re missing, and win everything here,” Reguilon told Inter Miami’s official website.

The Real Madrid academy graduate will be aiming to make the most of his fresh start as he fell down Tottenham’s pecking order previous campaign. He started two of his six appearances in all competitions for the north London outfit in the 2024-25 season.
