Soccer World Reacts to 2026 FIFA World Cup Draw As Lionel Messi’s Squad Lands In ‘Easy’ Group

The 2026 FIFA World Cup draw took place at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C., on Friday.

After Lionel Messi’s Argentina were drawn into an allegedly ‘easy’ group in Friday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup draw on Dec. 5, fans worldwide have expressed their disgruntlement on social media.

Fans Unhappy With Lionel Messi’s Fortune at 2026 FIFA World Cup Draw

With just six months to go for the 23rd edition of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the final draw took place at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC. Messi’s side will face Algeria, Austria, and Jordan in Group J of the quadrennial tournament.

Lionel Scaloni’s team is hoping to become the third team ever to defend the World Cup. But this draw has fans lashing out at FIFA for favoritism towards Messi and Argentina. One fan wrote: “Watched the World Cup draw live was funny bc people in chat were saying ‘Rigged’ at every Argentina opponent.” Another fan added, “Of course Argentina gets the easiest group.”

Another wrote: “Full FIFA World Cup draw. Argentina has the easiest draw. For real, Messi’s path to another World Cup win is so smooth. Bring it on.”

One fan posted: “World Cup draw rigged for Argentina. Argue with a wall.” Another fan echoed the sentiment: “In this draw, I think Argentina is the country with the easiest games. FIFA World Cup draw.”

One comment concluded the collective sentiment: “Argentina already having the easiest World Cup draw known to man! DISGRACE.”

Argentina won the most recent FIFA Men’s World Cup, lifting the trophy at Qatar 2022 after a dramatic final against defending champions France.

The 2022 World Cup was held in Qatar from 20 November to 18 December, featuring 32 teams playing 64 matches in the last edition before expansion to 48 teams. Argentina’s campaign started with a shock group-stage loss to Saudi Arabia, but they rebounded with wins over Mexico and Poland to top Group C and advance to the knockouts. From there, they beat Australia in the round of 16, the Netherlands in a tense quarterfinal that went to penalties, and Croatia in the semifinal to reach their sixth World Cup final.

The final at Lusail Stadium became one of the most memorable in history, with Argentina and France drawing 3–3 after extra time before Argentina won 4–2 on penalties. Lionel Messi scored twice for Argentina, while Kylian Mbappé produced a hat-trick for France to repeatedly drag his team back into the match. In the shootout, Argentina converted four of their attempts to secure their third World Cup title and first since 1986, cementing Messi’s legacy on the international stage.

Lionel Messi Confident About Argentina’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Chances

Prior to the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw in the United States, Lionel Messi suggested that Argentina’s players are prepared to defend their world title next summer.

“Can what happened in Qatar be repeated? Yes, I believe it’s a group that will try again, and will give everything and fight. The World Cup is very difficult, any team can make things tough for you and eliminate you. The ball might hit the post and go out, or hit the post and go in, and just like that, your journey ends or you lose on penalties,” Messi said during an interview with ESPN.

The Inter Miami superstar continued, “In the last World Cup, luck was on our side. Even though we were greatly superior in our matches against the Netherlands and France, we ended up going to penalties, and then we had the beast as a goalkeeper who made us win. But it can happen that you reach penalties and don’t win… It’s very hard to win the World Cup.”

Messi is set to appear in his sixth FIFA World Cup next year, hoping to win his second.
