‘Mbappe’s Goals Don’t Make Him a Leader’ — Ex-Real Madrid Star Who Won Champions League Makes Bold Claim

Kylian Mbappe called out by former Real Madrid star for his comments about the squad following their loss to S.L. Benfica in the Champions League.

Kylian Mbappe has been in red-hot form for Real Madrid this season, breaking and leveling records on the go. However, one former player has now slammed the forward for his recent comments about the squad at Santiago Bernabeu.

Kylian Mbappe Called Out by Former Real Madrid Star

Mbappe was furious with his Real Madrid teammates this week after their shock 4-2 loss to Benfica in the UEFA Champions League. The Frenchman claimed that they were not a team of champions, as their attitude was not right, and they were not consistent on the pitch.

The striker took shots at his teammates, claiming they lacked the desire to beat the opponents, and that was the main reason they did not finish in the Top 8.

Former Real Madrid star Predrag Mijatovic has now slammed Mbappe for his comments, saying that he is not a leader. The 1997/98 UEFA Champions League winner said the squad lacked a player who could step up and lead them, as Sergio Ramos, Luka Modric, and Karim Benzema did in recent seasons. He said on Cadena SER:

“I think more than lacking players, what’s missing is a leader. I don’t know, a Sergio Ramos, a Modric, a Benzema, a Fernando Hierro. This current Real Madrid team doesn’t have a leader figure who, in difficult moments, grabs you by the collar and asks, ‘What are you doing?’”

He admitted that Mbappe is doing well by scoring the goals for the club, but that does not make him a leader. He praised the Frenchman’s qualities, but went on to compare him with Zinedine Zidane, saying that the Real Madrid legend was also not a leader, and said:

“Mbappe is not a leader. All of Mbappe’s goals do not make him a leader. Being a leader is something else: it can be a player with less quality, but with personality and character, someone who is the coach on the field and whom the players listen to. He’s a tremendous player. You know that Zidane with the French national team was never the leader. Deschamps or Blanc were. He was the best player, but not the leader.”

Real Madrid lost the Spanish Super Copa to Barcelona earlier in January, which led to Xabi Alonso’s exit within 24 hours. Alvaro Arbeloa’s time as the manager has not got off to the best start, as they were eliminated from the Copa Del Rey by second division side Albacete Balompié and then shocked by Benfica in the UEFA Champions League this week.
