Wrexham have had a Hollywood-esque rise in English soccer, but have not managed to set the EFL Championship alight. They are not far off from the Premier League promotion places, but need a spark to get there.
Former Manchester United Star Told To Join Wrexham
Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke has urged Jesse Lingard to follow his footsteps and join Wrexham. The former striker is unsure about what the Englishman wants next in his career after a stint in South Korea with K League 1 side FC Seoul.
He believes that the Red Devils academy product might take a chance on a move to Saudi Arabia, but would not be surprised if he chose Wrexham, as it would bring him closer to his family.
The ex-Man Utd forward sent a key piece of advice to the 33-year-old, saying that it would not be a bad move to drop into the Championship and become the hero for a promotion-battling side. He told Poker Scouts:
“If he were to go to Wrexham, that wouldn’t be a surprise either. Maybe he feels it’s time to come back home to be closer to his daughter and help Wrexham get promoted to the Premier League. That could be one last rodeo for him, and I’ve experienced the advantages of joining a Championship team. I did it at Sunderland when they were 23rd, and we got promoted as champions.”
Yorke went on to claim that a move to Wrexham, who are ambitious about their progress, is the best way back for Lingard to the Premier League.
“It can be done, and it’s a way to get Jesse back to a level I’m sure he’s craving. I would certainly consider it. Wrexham are a very ambitious team with wealthy backers, making good progress and currently sitting mid-table in the Championship,” he said.
Yorke added, “We know that with a good run, you can get promoted in a heartbeat. I would tell Jesse to look at it, as I’m a prime example that it’s possible.”
Wrexham are on an astronomical rise in the English soccer pyramid, having gained back-to-back promotions. They are sitting ninth in the Championship table, just a point off sixth-placed Watford, who sit in the final playoff spot.
The Ryan Reynolds co-owned side is not far away from the automatic promotion spot, too, as second-placed Middlesbrough are just six points ahead with 20 matches left in the league.
