The Major League Soccer (MLS) is set to begin its 31st edition on Saturday, Feb. 21, prior to the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup this June. And, MLS commissioner Don Garber is keen to see the league grow more in the aftermath of the international tournament.
MLS Chief Hopes for More From 2026 FIFA World Cup
Speaking to Reuters, Garber shared his two cents on how the 2026 FIFA World Cup is likely to maximize the popularity of the MLS, which has flourished since Lionel Messi’s arrival.
“This is a massive year for the MLS and a seminal moment for soccer, not just in the United States but throughout North America. We hope that some of (the World Cup) drama, some of that appeal and history, could rub off and create a lasting legacy,” Garber said.
“There’s going to be millions and millions of people either coming to our country and will go back and hopefully be fans of the game, or they’re living here supporting their own culture, their own nationality. We believe that we’re a league for a new America,” he added.
Garber, who has been leading the MLS for around 26 years, revealed his mission of helping potential new supporters recognize the worth of existing American soccer clubs.
“They’re coming into it by following the European leagues or coming into it by following the World Cup and following national teams, and they may not be as exposed to their local MLS club as we need to make them be. That falls on us to do that… but obviously, the plan has been working. It has been a slow build. It hasn’t happened overnight,” he said.

The 68-year-old American soccer executive also stated he is hopeful about the MLS’ growth in the coming years, mentioning how the league has the admiration of Lionel Messi.
“You know, we’re entering our 31st year. That’s not an overnight sensation but certainly not around the 100 years the other leagues are around. Our best days, our best years, are still ahead. I think we’ll earn the trust and respect of the (soccer) fans, like we have earned the trust and respect of great players, the best player in history,” Garber concluded.
The 2026 MLS season will kick off with a match between St. Louis City and Charlotte at the Energizer Park in St. Louis this Saturday. The league will have a seven-week break, starting May 25, due to the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which will end on Jul. 19.
