Atlético Madrid is in the middle of the season, and things are not going well. Rumors about Julian Alvarez potentially leaving the club have emerged, and Diego Simeone was quizzed about the speculation at his recent press conference.
Diego Simeone Addresses Talk Linking Julian Alvarez to Arsenal
It is a journalist’s job to get to the bottom of every rumor, and when huge media organizations such as ESPN report potential transfers, managers are often asked for their comments. Simeone was on the receiving end of such a question this week ahead of Atlético Madrid’s La Liga match against Mallorca.
The Atlético Madrid manager was not happy with the question about his star striker’s future. He was surprised that the journalist took the opportunity at the press conference to quiz him about a possible exit and said:
“Seriously? Are you seriously asking me that? The truth is that Julian Alvarez speaks for himself, because of the name he has, the authority he carries, and the career he’s built, right?”
Reports this week claimed that Alvarez could be set to leave the Spanish side, with Chelsea and Arsenal interested. The former Manchester City star left the door open when asked about a possible exit at the end of the season, saying earlier this season that he was not thinking about the rumors.
“Look, it doesn’t bother me. I try not to pay much attention, but I know what’s being said. It’s all over social media. I think it’s more what’s being said online than what’s actually happening. I’m very focused on this season, on what lies ahead with Atlético Madrid. So, I try to tune it out and think about myself, about continuing to grow as a player, and about winning.”
The Argentine’s failure to shut down the rumors saw more publications add fuel to the fire. Barcelona is also said to be keen on the former River Plate forward, who has been given a $118 million price tag. The Catalan side sees him as the ideal long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski, whose contract expires this summer.
Arsenal is unhappy with Viktor Gyokeres, and Gabriel Jesus has not yet been offered a new deal. They are in the market for a new forward and see the Argentine as an ideal fit for Mikel Arteta’s side, as he can press, score, and comes with Premier League experience, having played at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola.
