Chelsea is currently having a decent season, currently sitting in 4th place. They are five points behind Aston Villa, who have also had an impressive last few months. The Blues failed to close down the gap, and Everton are also only one point behind after 15 games played so far.
The Premier League giants could not manage to break down Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth. Despite dominating with possession, Chelsea could not break the deadlock. Cole Palmer started for the first time since mid-September, but even that didn’t help. But that wasn’t it, they lost their striker to an injury and currently face a major issue.
What Happened to Liam Delap?
After an awkward landing from his clash with Marcos Senesi, striker Liam Delap injured his shoulder in the 31st minute. He was forced off the field and replaced by Marc Guiu. Reports later claimed that Delap suffered a shoulder injury, and his return remains uncertain.
The Englishman’s injury worsens Maresca’s worries, who already has a long list of sidelined players. Romeo Lavia, Levi Colwill, and Dario Essugo are the other players currently sidelined due to injuries.
🚨Maresca on Liam Delap: “He was already out two months, he will have to be out again, we don’t know how long but it looks quite bad his shoulder. We need that kind of no9, so we are quite unlucky, we tried today with Marc (Guiu)” pic.twitter.com/uDQxyphlF2

Delap joined Chelsea on a $41.3 million transfer from Ipswich Town in the summer. He had scored 12 goals and delivered two assists in 40 games before his move to London. Delap was impressive for Manchester City’s U21 team, scoring 35 goals in 36 games.
However, he has been unable to replicate that form for The Blues so far this season. The striker has managed to find the net only twice for them so far, including one against FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League.
How Will Liam Delap’s Injury Affect Chelsea?
The 6-time PL winners are currently without a reliable striker after the $46.5 million star‘s injury. After the Bournemouth game, Enzo Maresca spoke about Delap’s struggles to stay fit.
“Unfortunately, he has already been out for two months, and he has to be out again. We don’t know for how long, but it looks quite bad, his shoulder. He has been unlucky. We are also a bit unlucky because we need that kind of a No.9,” he said.
Chelsea have a key clash against Atalanta coming up next week, followed by an important game against Everton. They are forced to adjust to Guiu and João Pedro for the time being, which means both of them will be under pressure in the final third. It will be interesting to see how Maresca will field his team without a traditional striker against his opponents.
