Atlético Madrid Boss Diego Simeone Sends Clear Message on Antoine Griezmann Amid MLS Links

Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has urged MLS target Antoine Griezmann to stay until the end of the 2025-26 season.

France and Atlético Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann has reportedly attracted interest from a Major League Soccer (MLS) side in recent months. And, Atlético manager Diego Simeone has urged his player to remain at his current club until the Copa del Rey final.

Antoine Griezmann Told To Delay Potential Move to MLS Club

Last month, The Athletic reported that MLS club Orlando City are interested in signing Griezmann in March. Orlando is hoping to announce the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner as a new signing before the end of the league’s primary transfer window on March 26.

Despite being linked with Orlando, Griezmann is currently focused on playing for Simeone’s side. He played the full 90 minutes of his current club’s 3-0 Copa del Rey semi-final second leg loss at Barcelona on Tuesday, March 3, helping his side win 4-3 on aggregate.

Following his team’s recent game at the Camp Nou Stadium, Simeone was asked to comment on Griezmann’s future, with speculation currently rife about the veteran’s future.

“I hope he plays in the (Copa del Rey) final… he deserves it more than anyone. His quality and talent will stay with him for life. I love him dearly and always want the best for him. I hope he can play in that final,” the 55-year-old Argentine tactician responded.

Despite Orlando’s desire to sign the attacker later this month, the Frenchman is believed to be keen to spend the rest of the 2025-26 season at his La Liga club. Furthermore, his team has yet to enter formal talks with the MLS outfit over a possible transfer.

Meanwhile, Atlético captain Koke has revealed his wish to see the 34-year-old ex-Barcelona star finish his career at Los Rojiblancos. He said, “I don’t know what’s going to happen. We all want him to finish his career at Atlético, but that’s a decision he has to make.”

Atlético Madrid right-back Marcos Llorente also weighed in on the Orlando target’s personal situation. He added, “I don’t know what’s going to happen and we haven’t asked him. He’ll decide what’s best for him and we’ll support him. All I can say is that he’s a great friend.”

Lastly, Los Rojiblancos goalkeeper Juan Musso lauded Griezmann’s commitment to the club, insisting that he will be indebted to him. “Antoine has given so much to the team, all these years to the club… his decision will be the right one. These are very personal matters, and it’s very difficult to comment from the outside. Whatever he does, I will be grateful to him for life… for everything he gave us. Eternally grateful,” the Argentine commented.

The Orlando-linked forward has a contract at the Simeone-coached club until June 2027.
