Patrick Mahomes is often labeled as the best quarterback in the NFL, and he has backed that up during his seven years as a starter. The Kansas City Chiefs star has thrown for 32,352 yards, 245 touchdowns and 74 interceptions while completing 66.6% of his pass attempts, adding 2,243 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on 432 carries.
He has led the team to five Super Bowl appearances, winning three titles and three Super Bowl MVPs. Additionally, Mahomes has been named NFL MVP twice, while earning three All-Pro nods and six Pro Bowl selections. Despite his already stacked resume, Skip Bayless, who is known for his wildly controversial takes, does not believe he is the best quarterback in the league.
Skip Bayless Would Rather Have Joe Burrow Over Patrick Mahomes
Skip Bayless recently appeared on Jubilee’s Surrounded podcast, where he debated 25 sports fans. The sports media personality went viral for claiming that he would rather have Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow instead of Patrick Mahomes.
Speaking to a Philadelphia Eagles fan, Bayless stated:
“Is Patrick Mahomes the best quarterback right now? I’ll take Joe Burrow over Patrick Mahomes.”
The fan responded:
“Now, listen, I love Joe Burrow. When he’s healthy, he’s great. The problem is that he’s part of an organization that doesn’t like to play defense, so he’s never going to win like that. I watched Joe Burrow’s first game against the Eagles, where he got sacked eight times.”
Burrow has been among the best quarterbacks in the NFL since the Cincinnati Bengals selected him first overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. He is also coming off a dominant season where he threw for 4,918 yards, 43 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 70.6% of his pass attempts, adding 201 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 42 carries.
He clearly outplayed Mahomes, who had a down season for his standards, during the regular season. The Chiefs’ star threw for 3,928 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 67.5% of his pass attempts, adding 307 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 58 carries.
PFN’s QB+ metric ranked Burrow as the fifth-best quarterback in the league, while ranking Mahomes tenth. While the numbers favor the former, his team finished 9-8 and failed to reach the postseason for the third time in his five-year career. Meanwhile, the latter led the Chiefs to a 15-1 record and their seventh consecutive postseason appearance since he took over as a starter.
In fact, Kansas City has advanced as far as the AFC Championship Game in each year that Mahomes has been their starting quarterback. Although Burrow has shown that he has tremendous talent, he will need to prove that he can consistently win when it counts before drawing serious consideration as the best quarterback in the league.
