Brian Schottenheimer’s Future As Cowboys HC Questioned by NFL Analyst: ‘Nobody’s Afraid of Him’

Skip Bayless questions Brian Schottenheimer’s “nice guy” approach as the Dallas Cowboys miss the playoffs, warning it could limit the team’s potential.

With the Dallas Cowboys (7-8-1) eliminated from playoff contention, questions have started to surface regarding the franchise’s commitment to first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer. In particular, one NFL analyst and Cowboys superfan had a clear message after Dallas’ Christmas Day outing: “Nice guys finish last.”

Skip Bayless Isn’t Sold on Brian Schottenheimer’s Leadership Style

Skip Bayless, a longtime television personality in sports media and vocal supporter of the Cowboys, took to social media this Christmas to voice his concerns about the Schottenheimer era moving forward.

“I’m not sure about Schotty,” Bayless said, fittingly in a Diet Mountain Dew shirt, during one of his patented online rants. “I’m just not sure how hard they play for him. I think they just think he’s a nice guy. Nobody’s afraid of him.”

He also went on to suggest Schottenheimer bears little resemblance to the intensity or drive that has defined some of the Cowboys’ most successful coaches. Bayless believes that the lack of edge and authoritative presence will ultimately limit Dallas from reaching its full potential.

“There’s no Jimmy Johnson in him,” Bayless continued. “There’s no Tom Landry in him, obviously. Nobody fears for their job. It’s still a country club. Great place to play because Schotty keeps everybody happy, because he’s just such a nice guy. Nice guys finish last in the NFL. It’s not what I need in my head football coach.”

On the contrary, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has publicly expressed strong approval of Schottenheimer’s work during his first season at the helm. Jones praised Schottenheimer’s approach while navigating a long list of setbacks, offering little indication that any change would be entertained at head coach.

“He’s had an outstanding year,” Jones said on Dec. 19. “He’s technically as sound as you can draw up. We really like his philosophy of how to play football. We’ve had some adversity this year. He’s met it head on. Bottom line is, I’m very pleased with his first year as coach.”

Even Pro Football Hall of Famer and legendary Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith echoed support for Schottenheimer this week, claiming the franchise finally appears to be making tangible progress.

“For the first time in a long time, for me, I feel like we’re heading in the right direction,” Smith shared on the Netflix Christmas Day broadcast.

Only time will tell whether Bayless’ stance on Schottenheimer’s “nice guy” demeanor proves prophetic, as all signs suggest his 2025 performance won’t spark any consideration of ending his Cowboys tenure. Dallas is scheduled to close its season on Jan. 4 with a road matchup against the New York Giants (2-13), who first face the Las Vegas Raiders (2-13) on Dec. 28 at 4:05 p.m. ET.
