Shilo Sanders Reveals Real Reason He Won’t Give His NFL Debut Jersey to Father Deion Sanders

Shilo Sanders made plays in his Tampa Bay Buccaneers preseason debut and shared his famous dad Deion's reaction to his game worn jersey.

Imagine trying to make a name for yourself when your dad is one of the greatest defensive players ever. That’s the reality for Shilo and Shedeur Sanders, sons of Deion Sanders. Having football royalty for a father definitely helps open doors and land some opportunities other players might never see. However, it also adds increased expectations for greatness, especially from Deion himself.

How Did Deion Sanders React to the Offer of Shilo’s First Game-Worn Jersey?

That last name means constant comparisons and sky-high expectations. Shedeur gets a little bit of a break since he’s a quarterback, so people can’t judge him play-for-play against his dad as easily. Shilo, though, is a safety, and folks love sizing him up against Deion, even if they played different spots in the secondary.

While most of the offseason headlines centered on Shedeur and his stunning slide down draft board, Shilo slipped under the radar. He went undrafted, then quietly found a spot with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during training camp.

That’s when things got real. Shilo had a shot to show the Buccaneers he deserved a spot on the 53-man roster during their preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans on Saturday night.

He didn’t actually get on the field until the second half. But once he did, it didn’t take long for him to get noticed. Shilo pushed the line of scrimmage and managed to hit Titans quarterback Brandon Allen just as Allen threw the ball away.

Afterward, in a conversation about his game-worn jersey, Shilo’s story took a lighter turn. The timing was just too perfect: his first NFL game, even if it was only the preseason, happened on his dad’s 58th birthday. In a video posted on X, Shilo shared how his dad felt about getting that jersey.

“He didn’t want it,” Shilo said with a laugh. “Because he’s a Hall of Famer and he expects like 30 times more. He didn’t want that jersey. I’m gonna give it to my mom, though.”

ESPN’s Jenna Laine was surprised and asked, “Not even as a birthday gift?”

“Nah, he don’t want it,” Shilo replied. “I’ve gotta get like three picks or something.”

Still, the night meant something. When asked about the first hit of his pro career, Shilo said it felt good, but he admitted he left some big plays out there and pointed to the work ahead.

“It felt good. I’m just thankful. Thank you, God, for putting me in a position to even be on the field. I left some big hits on the table.” He told fans to hang tight: “Next game will most likely be an improvement on my angles, on my tracing. Because you don’t really get to work on it in NFL practice, or you’re gonna get kicked out of practice.”

Head coach Todd Bowles has been upfront about where things stand. Bowles says Shilo has a real shot at making the final roster. For that to happen, he’ll need to make the most of every snap he gets in these preseason games, not just to impress the coaches, but to get out of Deion’s shadow and write his own story.
