Michigan fired former coach Sherrone Moore for cause in December after his alleged relationship with staffer Paige Shiver was revealed. Just hours after being fired, Moore was arrested and later charged with felonious third-degree home invasion and two misdemeanors: stalking and breaking and entering into Shiver’s home.
Sherrone Moore’s Former Assistant Sues University of Michigan
On Wednesday, Shiver, via her legal team, filed a lawsuit in Washtenaw County Court. The former Michigan staffer accused Michigan of violating the Michigan Freedom of Information Act, which helps people find and review public records.
Attorney Andrew Stroth, who is representing Shiver, explained his client’s lawsuit against Michigan.
“The lawsuit filed today demands transparency and accountability from the University of Michigan, President Grasso and the Board of Regents,” Stroth said. “This public university paid Jenner & Block $12 million to investigate the Sherrone Moore scandal and the abuse, Title IX and Title VII violations within the athletic department and Schembechler Hall, yet now refuses to release the investigation’s findings. It was important for our client to file this initial FOIA lawsuit to ensure the truth and facts come out.”
In her suit against Michigan, Shiver claimed that her request for video, audio, and transcript interviews of herself, Moore, and her dad was denied by the institution in February and that Michigan also stonewalled another request last month.

Shiver’s contract with the institution expired on February 28 and was not renewed. She joined the program as an assistant and was later promoted to an executive assistant to the head football coach two years ago when Moore succeeded Jim Harbaugh as the Wolverines’ coach. When the relationship with Shiver was revealed, UoM fired Moore for cause since it violated the university’s policy.
Moore agreed to a plea deal in March, just before his scheduled hearing. Moore pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors (malicious use of a telecommunication device in a domestic relationship and trespassing).

The third-degree home invasion, misdemeanor stalking, and breaking and entering charges against the ex-Wolverines coach were dropped. Moore was sentenced to 18 months’ probation and over $1,300 in fines and court costs.
Moore rose through the ranks after joining Michigan in 2018 as the tight ends coach. He was promoted to co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach before becoming the program’s head coach in 2024.
He held the Wolverines’ top job for two seasons, compiling a 16-8 record, including a perfect 4-0 mark as acting head coach in 2023 while Harbaugh served two separate suspensions. He won the ReliaQuest Bowl against the Alabama Crimson Tide in his first full season in charge.
