Flag football will make its Olympic debut in 2028 during the Summer Games in Los Angeles.
It’s been a growing sport in the last few years and will now get the chance to shine at the biggest stage. So that means all the best players in the NFL will get to shine on the world stage, right? Not so fast.
Sean Payton Makes Bold Statement About Team USA’s Flag Football Roster
The Fanatics Flag Football Classic was held a little over a week ago when past and present NFL players, along with celebrity athletes, formed two teams, and the USA flag football team formed a third team to compete in a tournament.
While the NFL teams consisted of stars like Saquon Barkley, Stefon Diggs, Davante Adams, Alvin Kamara, Jalen Ramsey, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Myles Garrett, DeVonta Smith and Von Miller, along with past stars like Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski, they did not compete with the USA’s flag football stars.
The flag football stars, who have made a career out of the sport, like Darrell “Housh” Doucette III and Nico Casares, showed why they’ve become the best of the best at their respective sport.
Many believed the skills of NFL players would transfer over quite well, but the Fanatics Flag Football Classic showed that the game of flag football is just different.
After watching and being a part of that, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton sent a warning against the possibility of no NFL players making Team USA’s roster for the 2028 Olympic Games.
“I’ll be surprised if there’s one NFL player on that (Team USA flag) roster,” Sean Payton said, as he described a humbling experience of coaching the NFL’s best and the “Founders” team in the Fanatics flag football deal.
After seeing the scores and the games played in the tournament on March 21, it should not really come as a surprise.
Numerous clips went viral of Team USA players making NFL players look silly, and they crushed the NFL teams on their way to winning the championship. Team USA defeated the Wildcats 39-16 in the round robin and beat the Founders 43-16.
The Wildcats then beat the Founders 34-26 to earn another shot at playing Team USA for the championship. They kept it closer in the second go around, but fell to Team USA 24-14 as quarterback “Housh” Doucette won the Tournament MVP.
The event was held at BMO Stadium, and the world got to see just how good the flag football players are. The tournament reached 300 million views.
