The Super Bowl is set to take place on Sunday evening, and the two teams represented were not the ones many people predicted at the beginning of the season. The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots both overcame significant odds to reach the Super Bowl, setting us up for a highly competitive game.
One reason these are the last two teams standing is that they have loaded rosters. Their respective front offices have done a great job building through the draft and free agency, and they have many Pro Bowlers to show for it. Although those players will not be able to participate in the Pro Bowl, here are the players who were honored.
Seahawks’ Pro Bowlers
The Seahawks had six players named to the original Pro Bowl roster. They had two offensive players, three defensive players, and one specialist named to the team. Here are the players who made the roster but will be unable to play in the game.
Sam Darnold, Quarterback
Darnold was named to his second Pro Bowl in as many seasons after a great first season in Seattle. He threw for 4,048 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Wide Receiver
There was arguably no better wide receiver in football this season than Smith-Njigba. He caught 119 passes for 1793 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He was named a first-team All-Pro and officially established himself as one of the top receivers in the sport.

DeMarcus Lawrence, Defensive End
Lawrence chose to sign with the Seahawks in free agency after 11 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. He looked like he didn’t miss a beat, even in his age-33 season. He recorded 6.0 sacks on the year along with three forced fumbles, 11 tackles for loss, and 20 QB hits.
Leonard Williams, Defensive Tackle
It goes without saying that the Seahawks have one of the top defenses in football. That is why it makes sense for them to have multiple Pro Bowlers on that side of the ball. Leonard Williams had another great season, resulting in 7.0 sacks, nine tackles for loss, and 22 QB hits. He was also named a second-team All-Pro.
Devon Witherspoon, Cornerback
The top player in the Seahawks secondary is cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who received his third-straight Pro Bowl nod and was named second-team All-Pro. Despite only playing 12 games, Witherspoon had one interception and seven passes defended, along with 72 total tackles.
Rashid Shaheed, Return Specialist
Shaheed was traded to the Seahawks mid-season, and his biggest impact came on special teams. He had one punt and one kick return for a touchdown during his nine games with the Seahawks in the regular season. Also, he returned the opening kickoff in the NFC Divisional round against the San Francisco 49ers.
Patriots’ Pro Bowlers
Despite having a 14-3 record in the regular season, the Patriots only had two players named to the Pro Bowl team.
Drake Maye, Quarterback
Maye’s second NFL season has been a full-on breakout. He will likely finish in the top two of NFL MVP voting and has opened the Patriots’ championship window much faster than anyone has expected. Maye threw for 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns with only eight interceptions. This will likely be his first of many Pro Bowl honors.
