Sauce Gardner Injury Update: Latest on Colts Star After Scary Blow in Week 13

Early in the first quarter, the Indianapolis Colts suffered a massive blow with star corner Sauce Gardner going down with an injury against the Texans

The Indianapolis Colts viewed their game against the Houston Texans as an opportunity to get back on track. After blowing the game against the Kansas City Chiefs, they needed to get back in the win column, especially to maintain their stranglehold on the division and the playoff spot.

However, with Daniel Jones limited by a fractured fibula, the rest of the roster was going to have to carry a heavy load for them. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse early in the game when their star trade acquisition, Sauce Gardner, went down with an injury.

What Happened to Sauce Gardner?

Early in the first quarter, after their opening drive went nowhere, the Colts were trying to limit the Texans from adding points on the board. However, a 12-yard completion from C.J. Stroud to Jayden Higgins came at a glaring price for Indianapolis.

Immediately, Gardner went down on the field with a left injury. Soon after, he had to be helped off the field, as Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported, “The Colts are calling it a calf injury for Sauce Gardner, and he is officially questionable to return.”

Acquired by the Colts in a blockbuster deal at the trade deadline, the team was willing to part ways with two first-round picks to bolster their defense and get it at the same level as the league’s highest-ranking offense.

Coming in at 11 on PFSN’s CB Impact rankings, he was having yet another excellent campaign. As a former Defensive Rookie of the Year and two-time All-Pro selection, Gardner already had a stellar reputation coming into this season, including three previous top-10 finishes on CBi.

As a result, the Colts hoped that he could make significant improvements to a defense that was middle-of-the-pack, thereby improving their chances of a deep playoff run.

Soon after the injury, Stephen Holder of ESPN brought the devastating news for Colts fans on X, stating, “Gardner is officially out of the game.” Given the nature and location of the injury, fans had to wait with bated breath for further confirmation about his status.

However, their worst fears were abated when Pelissero confirmed, “Colts CB Sauce Gardner is believed to have suffered a calf strain, per sources. Those can be tricky injuries, and he’ll have more tests. But Gardner’s Achilles appears intact, so there’s optimism he avoided a major injury.”

It remains to be seen if the injury will cause him to miss time in the coming weeks. Thankfully, the Colts have a slight lead over the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston, which should give them some breathing room.

But they need to put their best foot forward without Gardner, or their investment in him could all be for naught, even for this season.
