Mike Vrabel led the New England Patriots to the Super Bowl in his first season in charge of the franchise. Despite losing 29-13 to the Seattle Seahawks in the title game, optimism among Patriots fans is high about the team’s Super Bowl credentials next season.
Sam Acho Details Effect of Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini’s Saga on Patriots’ Season
During Thursday’s segment of the “NFL Live” show, former NFL linebacker Sam Acho expressed concern about Vrabel’s scandal involving Dianna Russini, which has dominated the offseason and could affect the Patriots’ next season.
“I’m excited for the long-term future of this team,” Acho said. “The question is gonna be for the current, for the present. How does this New England Patriots team overcome adversity? There’s all the talk about the coach and what happened with him and all of a sudden, will this team come together? Will this team divide apart? And so, I think the weaknesses have been addressed from an on-the-field perspective.
“My biggest concern is not just the strength of schedule on the outside, but the nucleus on the inside. A.J. Brown is a leader, hes gonna come in and lead. Romeo Doubs can play that position. Young guys like TreVeyon Henderson, young guys in that nucleus that can help keep the team together. That’s my biggest concern, in addition to, of course, the other powerhouses and the defenses in the AFC… Those are external concerns as well.”

Vrabel and Russini’s alleged relationship was uncovered in April, leading to the former NFL insider resigning from her job at The Athletic. Vrabel, meanwhile, missed Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft to attend counseling with his family.
TMZ also released a video of the pair from 2021 on a private boat in Tennessee, which garnered more attention. Moreover, the alleged relationship’s lengthy timeline was revealed when Page Six published photos of Vrabel and Russini allegedly kissing in a New York bar in 2020.

Questions about collusion between Vrabel and Russini were also raised, with fans and analysts calling for an investigation.
Even Brown’s trade from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Patriots was put under the microscope due to Russini’s early reporting about the wide receiver’s wish to be traded last year and the timeline of the move happening in June.
The off-field distractions around Vrabel and Russini have continued to cast a cloud over the Patriots’ preparations for the upcoming season, during which they’re one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl.
Vrabel presided over one of the biggest turnarounds in league history after joining a Patriots team that went 4-13 under Jerod Mayo in 2024. He also led the Patriots to their best record since 2016, their first AFC East title in six seasons, and their first playoff spot since 2021, and he will be under pressure to repeat his heroics in the upcoming season.
