New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr cannot catch a break. The 12-year veteran is already dealing with a shoulder injury that could sideline him for the entire 2025 NFL season, but that is nothing compared to the grief he is dealing with at home.
Carr shared that his wife, Heather, recently had a miscarriage, and he had to rush her to the emergency room at the same time as his scheduled appointment for a potential shoulder surgery.

Carr was quoted as saying, “We don’t just have four babies, we have 5. One is in heaven. We’ll get to meet the other one when we get to heaven.”
The Carr family currently has three sons and a daughter. His eldest son, Dallas, was born with intestinal malrotation, a congenital condition that affects the positioning of a person’s intestines. The condition occurs in approximately 1 in 500 American babies.
Dallas was born eight days premature, but had to spend his first 23 days in the hospital as doctors worked to solve the condition. Carr was still in college with Fresno State at that time, and had to endure the scare of his first child going through three surgeries at such a young age.
Carr’s Career Has Also Been Full of Highs and Lows
Derek Carr’s NFL journey has been equally full of ups and downs. He had to beat out Matt Schaub after coming into the league as a 2nd round pick in 2014. After six years in Oakland, he was also the face of the franchise during their relocation to Las Vegas, a move that upset long-time Oakland fans.
During his tenure with the Raiders, he never had stability at the head coach position. Dennis Allen was fired in his rookie season, and Tony Sparano came on as an interim head coach. He then had Jack Del Rio, Jon Gruden, Josh McDaniels, and Antonio Pierce in an eight-year window, with none of the head coaches lasting three full seasons.

Carr then signed with the New Orleans Saints as a free agent in 2023, reuniting him with Dennis Allen. The first year had positive signs, but they finished 9-8 and missed the playoffs. He then suffered an oblique injury and a concussion that ruled him out for the majority of the 2024 season, and once again, Dennis Allen was fired.
It now looks like his time with the Saints could be over, with Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough drafted in the second round of the NFL draft last week.
