Is Russell Wilson Playing in the Bills-Giants Preseason Game? Latest on the Veteran QB’s Status

On his third time in three years, will Russell Wilson get the starting nod in Week 1 of the preseason for the New York Giants against the Buffalo Bills?

Since his exit from the Seattle Seahawks, Russell Wilson has been coming back each year with diminishing returns for his franchise. Now, on his fourth time in five years, the veteran quarterback will be looking to find some stability near the end of his career with the New York Giants. With general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll feeling the pressure from ownership, the aim for the team is a potential playoff berth.

On his way, Wilson might not be good enough anymore to drag a team to the postseason. But as they prepare Jaxson Dart in the wings, the 36-year-old is the QB1 on the team. However, will the New York fan base get to see their new quarterback in action when their preseason slate begins against the Buffalo Bills?

Will Russell Wilson Start Against the Buffalo Bills?

An ugly exit from the Denver Broncos, after Sean Payton took over as the head coach, spelled doom for the former Super Bowl champion. However, he turned in a solid year with the Pittsburgh Steelers last year.

Over his first seven starts, he led the team to a 6-1 record (10-3 overall). However, from there, the magic wore off, and the year ended with five straight losses for the franchise. This shot with the Giants might be his final one as a starter in the league.

Rather than shy away from it, though, Wilson is relishing the opportunity. “I think it’s the best honor in the world to be able to lead a group of men like this. Young, driven, smart, tough, talented guys, man, it doesn’t get any better than that.”

Calling it the “greatest gift in the world,” Wilson had a clear mission for his time in New York. “I just want to be able to bring that championship mentality every day, a championship approach, the competitive edge every day, how we want to go about practice, how we want to push each other, how we want to challenge it.”

The first steps to that mission began in the summer during practice. But the rest of the roster is also going to see the game-day preparation from one of the pioneers of the dual-threat quarterback style against the Bills.

Art Stapleton of North Jersey confirmed in an exclusive breakthrough, “The New York Giants will start the same quarterback to open their preseason that they expect to be QB1 one month from now when they begin the regular season against Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders.”

Additionally, he made it clear that Dart would also be getting extended playing time during the game. However, it was unclear how much playing time Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito would get, if at all.

It’s not going to be long before the Giants embrace their long-term vision with their first-round draft pick. However, until that switch occurs, Wilson has a chance to restore his reputation and potentially lead a surprising push in New York.
