The San Francisco 49ers’ receiving corps faces another anxious week, with Ricky Pearsall’s knee injury clouding his status ahead of a pivotal matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
What Happened to Ricky Pearsall?
Ricky Pearsall missed Wednesday’s practice due to knee soreness, a new issue that emerged following his standout performance in Week 3, when he played 97% of offensive snaps and led the team with eight catches for 117 yards.
Pearsall told reporters he was not exactly sure when he hurt his knee and described the injury as minor, adding, “I actually don’t even know when I hurt my knee, to be completely honest. I felt a little bit of soreness after the game, and it wasn’t until later on in the night that I was kind of moving around and felt a little soreness; nothing that I was really concerned about.
“I came in the next day, and was talking to the trainers, and I told them the same thing I’m telling you right now — I’m not really concerned, but I just want to check it out a little bit. And that’s kind of what I’m doing with this. It’s just a little bit of soreness, and I’m not worried about it. If there was a game today, I’d play.”
Head coach Kyle Shanahan echoed Pearsall’s optimism, saying he expects the second-year receiver to practice later in the week and downplayed any long-term concern.
#UPDATE: Pearsall returned to practice on Thursday and is trending towards playing in Week 4. On Friday, he was officially listed as questionable for Week 4.
The 2024 first-round pick has rapidly become the 49ers’ top receiving option, leading the team with 16 catches for 281 yards through three games, ranking third in the NFL in receiving yards. His reliability is especially critical with fellow wideout Jauan Jennings (ankle/shoulder) also missing practice.
Pearsall’s ability to convert 14 of his 16 catches into first downs has made him a trusted target for both Brock Purdy and Mac Jones this season. Notably, Pearsall has posted two 100-yard games already this year, becoming the first 49er since 2006 to accomplish that feat in the first three weeks.
According to the team and multiple beat reporters, there was no clear play during the Arizona Cardinals game when Pearsall suffered the injury, and the team believes it’s mostly a maintenance issue.
49ers’ WR Options for Week 4 vs. Jaguars
With Jennings sidelined and Pearsall’s status still to be determined, the 49ers may need to dig deeper into their receiving depth. If Pearsall is limited or cannot play, Brandon Aiyuk becomes the clear focal point, while Kendrick Bourne, who has three catches for 32 yards since rejoining the team in Week 2, would be in line for a larger role. The team could also lean more on tight end George Kittle and running back Christian McCaffrey in the passing game to offset any shortfall at wide receiver.
San Francisco’s broader injury picture remains a concern, with McCaffrey (calf/rest), Trent Williams (knee/rest), Yetur Gross-Matos (knee), and CJ West (thumb) all missing Wednesday’s practice. Quarterbacks Purdy (toe) and Jones (knee) were limited. Demarcus Robinson, returning from suspension, could also see increased snaps if Pearsall or Jennings are unavailable.
The final injury report later this week will determine the 49ers’ available weapons for Sunday, but both Pearsall’s and Shanahan’s comments suggest optimism that he will be ready to suit up against Jacksonville.
