Who Are the Referees in the Bills-Jaguars Game? Get To Know the Refs for the NFL Wild Card Round

When the Buffalo Bills travel to EverBank Stadium to face the Jacksonville Jaguars, a recognizable referee will be the lead official.

January football has a way of turning every moment into a referendum. Every third down feels existential. Every incomplete pass invites debate. And every yellow flag, or conspicuous lack of one, lands with the emotional weight of a plot twist.

The NFL postseason thrives on that tension, and nowhere is it more visible than in the conversations around officiating. For the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars, that responsibility belongs to Brad Allen.

A Look at the Referees for the Bills-Jaguars Game

When the AFC’s No. 6 seed Buffalo Bills travel to EverBank Stadium to face the No. 3 seed Jacksonville Jaguars, Brad Allen will be the lead official. This will be Allen’s seventh postseason assignment.

He has been an NFL official since 2014 and has become one of the league’s more recognizable referees, sometimes due to his restraint, and sometimes because of moments fans would rather forget.

Allen will not be working alone. Like all playoff crews, the officiating team pulls officials from multiple regular-season crews.

The full list for the game includes:

  • Referee: Brad Allen
  • Umpire: Mike Morton
  • Down Judge: Sarah Thomas
  • Line Judge: Walter Flowers
  • Field Judge: Dyrol Prioleau
  • Side Judge: James Coleman
  • Back Judge: Greg Wilson

From a numbers standpoint, Allen’s crew leans toward minimalism. During the regular season, his games averaged 10.2 penalties for 81.7 yards, both of which were below league averages.

He ranked among the officials who threw the fewest flags, calling the third-fewest penalties overall. For fans desperate to see players, not officials, decide a playoff game, that statistic reads like a deep sigh of relief.

Still, fewer flags don’t always mean fewer questions. Allen’s crew ranked last in offensive holding calls, a detail that feels relevant with Buffalo tied for the league lead in holding penalties.

Jacksonville came to the postseason as one of the more penalized teams per game, though the Jags have made noticeable changes in cleaning up mistakes late in the season.

Recent memory also plays a role here. Allen’s crew officiated the Week 18 matchup between the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a game that led to debate over a ruled-dead backward pass and a questionable offensive pass interference call that stalled Carolina’s momentum.

Those moments tend to linger, especially in January, when trust in officiating is at its most fragile. There’s also the math of home-field trends. Home teams have won roughly 61% of games with Allen as referee, and during this season, home teams went 9-5 under his watch.

Jacksonville may like that number. Buffalo might counter with its own history, as the Bills are 3-0 in playoff games officiated by Allen, although all three games were played at home, according to SBNation.
