Jaire Alexander has been among the best cornerbacks in football when healthy. The two-time All-Pro corner has struggled to stay on the field, however, as he played just four games in 2021 and seven games in each of the past two seasons.
While Alexander was once a key part of the Green Bay Packers’ defense, his recent injury struggles and inability to stay on the field led the franchise to release him on Monday, June 9, after the two sides failed to agree on a revised contract. His former Louisville Cardinals teammate, Lamar Jackson, publicly made the case that the Baltimore Ravens should bring him in on Tuesday, and one day later they honored their star quarterback’s wishes. Head coach John Harbaugh recently shared his thoughts on the signing.

Ravens HC John Harbaugh Discusses Jaire Alexander Signing
Alexander signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Ravens. The deal includes incentives that has the potential to bring the total value to $6 million. Harbaugh recently shared his thoughts on the signing.
“I just feel excited about it,” Harbaugh told media on Wednesday. “Had a chance to sit down with him today, which was an awesome, awesome, awesome time. He’s excited to be here. We’re excited to have him. It had been kind of behind the scenes in the works a little bit and I know he wanted to be here. We wanted him here. So, for it to work out the way it did – it made Lamar happy. I think it made everybody happy. Just an opportunity to become a better team in that sense today. So, we’re really excited about it.”

While Alexander had issues staying on the field, he was productive in the few games he played last season. He recorded 16 total tackles, 15 solo tackles, two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown, one fumble recovery and seven passes defended.
The 28-year-old spent three seasons as teammates with Jackson in college with both players joining Louisville as part of their 2015 recruiting class. The two stars also opted to enter the 2018 NFL Draft, where they were selected 18th and 32nd overall, respectively.
Despite his battles with injuries in recent years, the addition gives Baltimore the potential to have one of the best secondarys in the entire NFL. Alexander will join cornerbacks Marlon Humphrey and Nate Wiggins as well as safeties Kyle Hamilton and rookie Malaki Starks in what figures to be one of the league’s most impressive defensive units.
