Last year’s Kansas City Chiefs offensive performance was very underwhelming. By most metrics, the team finished outside the top 10, and no wide receiver tallied more than 650 yards. A significant reason for that drop in production was injuries. The entire offensive unit was ravaged throughout the year, beginning with Hollywood Brown in the preseason.
However, the most significant loss for Kansas City was undoubtedly Rashee Rice, who was gearing up for an explosive sophomore campaign after a rookie year that improved as the season progressed. This year, the organization hopes to have a better output. But their star receiver will once again be a question mark, at least to begin the season.
What Was Rashee Rice’s Injury?
Through three games in 2024, it was clear that Rice was gearing up for a breakout year. Tallying 288 yards, including a 103-yard performance on opening night, he seemed poised to establish himself as the clear-cut WR1 on the roster.
However, in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers, the talented wide receiver inadvertently collided with his quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, and was out of the game immediately. Later on, he underwent surgery to repair his LCL and hamstring for a full recovery.
Coming into the 2025 campaign, Rice is fully healthy and ready to go again. However, his off-field legal issues will play a factor in how his season shapes out.
Why Will Rice Face a Suspension?
A hit-and-run crash in Dallas that involved five vehicles in total saw Rice emerge as the primary culprit driving a Lamborghini Urus. Taking “full responsibility” for his actions, he confessed his crimes to the police.
As a result, he turned himself in after an arrest warrant was issued in his name and was jailed for a brief period in DeSoto, with a million-dollar lawsuit against him for the injuries caused by the incident.
The situation played out after the Chiefs’ victory in Super Bowl 58. However, with no clear resolution from a legal perspective, the NFL didn’t take any action till that point. Eventually, the matter was resolved in July of 2025.
Adam Schefter reported, “ESPN sources: A Dallas County judge just sentenced Chiefs WR Rashee Rice to five years’ probation and 30 days of jail time that can be served during those five years stemming from his role in a multi-car crash in Dallas during the 2024 offseason.”

However, beyond the judge’s word, the superstar wide receiver also faces the consequences of the NFL itself. The league is notoriously strict on such matters and may suspend the young WR.

“Now that the judge has ruled, the NFL can expedite its disciplinary process, and Rice is likely to receive a multi-game suspension.”
With a brutal schedule to open the year, including games against the Los Angeles Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Baltimore Ravens in that stretch, the Chiefs would undoubtedly feel the loss of their WR1.
