Just when it seemed Darren Waller had closed the book on his NFL career, the talented tight end has flipped the page and started a surprising new chapter, this time in Miami.
The Dolphins made a surprising move earlier Monday when they acquired Waller in a low-risk trade from the New York Giants. In return for Waller and a 2027 seventh-round pick, Miami sent the Giants a conditional 2026 sixth-round pick. However, Waller himself, coming out of retirement and accepting a one-year contract worth up to $5 million with the Dolphins, is the true storyline, not the draft selections.
Darren Waller Comes out of Retirement To Join Miami Dolphins After Rap Career Falls Flat
In June 2024, Waller, 32, left the game, citing persistent injuries, declining interest in football, and a desire to focus on other hobbies, particularly music. It appeared to be a quiet farewell from a player who had overcome hardship and found new meaning off the field.
But life had other plans.
The Dolphins were left without a legitimate starting tight end after trading away Jonnu Smith in a blockbuster deal just days prior. Suddenly, Waller comes into play and presents another opportunity.
Longtime Dolphins insider and Miami Herald columnist Omar Kelly discussed Waller’s comeback on “The Rich Eisen Show” in an open and somewhat humorous manner.

“I just didn’t know if Waller was ready to get back into playing football again, and it looks like he is,” Kelly said. “Darren Waller has established himself as an elite player in this league. Many know of his substance abuse and how he rebuilt his life. He’s got a great story. Last year, he stepped away from football ’cause obviously he didn’t find the love for it. Went to be a rapper, and now he’s back. Rap career didn’t take off.”
Waller’s story has always been one of perseverance, from early struggles with addiction to his rise as one of the league’s most admired tight ends with the Raiders.
In 2023, his one and only season with the Giants wasn’t easy. He managed only 52 receptions, 552 yards, and one touchdown due to injuries. Nevertheless, he displayed glimmers of the playmaker he was — and might be again.
Waller now has a new beginning in Miami. The Dolphins are banking on the seasoned veteran to make a significant impact on a team-friendly contract. For Waller, it’s a comeback to the sport he briefly abandoned but may never have truly left behind.
