Ranking the NFL’s 10 Highest-Paid Punters After AJ Cole’s Record-Breaking $15,800,000 Extension With Raiders

Being an NFL punter is a tough job and not one that gets noticed too often by the fans. There is typically not much of a difference between punters in terms of their contracts, but after AJ Cole signed a massive $15.8 million extension with the Las Vegas Raiders, he became the highest-paid player at the position.

Let’s take a look at the 10 highest-paid punters in terms of the average annual value of the contract. All contract details are provided by Spotrac.

10. Logan Cooke ($3 million AAV)

The Jacksonville Jaguars punter is entering the final year of a four-year, $12 million contract with the team, and he’s spent his first seven years with the organization. Last season, Logan Cooke made his first Pro Bowl and was named as a Second-Team All-Pro punter. He had a strong season altogether, as he recorded 68 punts for 3,359 yards (49.4 yards per punt), with exactly half of those ending up inside the 20-yard line.

9. Jamie Gillan ($3 million AAV)

‘The Scottish Hammer’ makes this list, as Jamie Gillan is beginning a three-year, $9 million contract extension after spending the previous three seasons with the team. He was able to play in 13 games in 2024 and recorded 56 punts for 2,448 yards (43.7 yards per attempt), with 27 punts being downed inside the 20-yard line.

8. Cameron Johnston ($3 million AAV)

Punter Cameron Johnston is in the second year of a three-year, $9 million contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The first season was not what anybody was hoping for, as he injured his knee in the first game after just a pair of punts and missed the remainder of the season. In February, he was able to get back on the field and is expected to be ready for Week 1.

7. JK Scott ($3 million AAV)

The Los Angeles Chargers’ JK Scott will be playing the first year of a two-year, $6 million contract in 2025. Scott is entering his fourth season overall with the Chargers, and in 2024, he recorded 72 punts for 3,362 yards (46.7 yards per punt), with 28 of those ending up inside the 20-yard line.

6. Riley Dixon ($3 million AAV)

Riley Dixon is ready to begin his new two-year, $6 million contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after spending the previous two seasons with the Denver Broncos. Last season, he recorded 77 punts for 3,597 yards (46.7 yards per attempt) with 33 punts inside the 20-yard line. The vagabond punter is looking to find a long-term home after his second stint with the Broncos.

5. Tommy Townsend ($3 million AAV)

Tommy Townsend is entering his second season with the Houston Texans and the final one of a two-year, $6 million contract. Townsend is one of the league’s more decorated punters, having won a pair of Super Bowls while making the Pro Bowl and securing First-Team All-Pro in 2022. In his first season with the Texans, he finished with 76 punts for 3,649 yards (48.0 yards per attempt) and landed 39 punts inside the 20-yard line.

4. Bryan Anger ($3.2 million AAV)

America’s Team has the fourth-highest-paid punter in terms of average annual value in the NFL in Bryan Anger. He is beginning a two-year, $6.4 million contract that he signed this offseason. Anger has made the Pro Bowl and Second-Team All-Pro twice in his 13-year career. Last season, he had 62 punts for 3,005 yards (48.5 yards per attempt), with 24 punts inside the 20-yard line.

3. Jack Fox ($3.516 million AAV)

The Detroit Lions’ Jack Fox is third on this list and in the middle of a four-year, $14.065 million contract. He has been a force on special teams and is getting compensated well for it.

Last season, Fox made his second Pro Bowl and was named as a First-Team All-Pro last season. Over his career, his 48.8 yards-per-punt average is the all-time NFL record and it will be interesting to see if he can continue that as his career goes on.

2. Michael Dickson ($3.675 million AAV)

Seattle Seahawks punter Michael Dickson currently holds the second spot in the average annual value list for the position after Cole’s extension. He was a Pro Bowler and First-Team All-Pro in 2018 but has not been able to replicate that since. He is in the final season of a four-year, $14.7 million contract.

Last season, he finished with 76 punts for 3,756 yards (49.4 yards per punt), with 31 punts inside the 20-yard line.

1. AJ Cole ($3.83 million AAV)

The Las Vegas Raiders have officially agreed to a four-year, $15.8 million extension with Cole and he has certainly been worth every penny. He has made First-Team All-Pro twice in his career and still has one year remaining, so he is making just under $20 million over the next five years.
