There was a period during the 2025 off-season that felt like the end of Matthew Stafford’s time with the LA Rams. There was a market for him elsewhere, and the Rams allowed him to speak with other teams about his value.
Sean McVay finally had a chance to speak about the situation.
Stafford Had One Foot out the Door in LA
Former Detroit Lions quarterback Matt Stafford came to the LA Rams as an experienced veteran and immediately helped them win a Super Bowl. He was someone Sean McVay and GM Les Snead needed to get the well-built Rams roster over the finish line.
It was a bold call to trade Jared Goff plus pick compensation for the veteran, but it paid off, and the Rams won it all. They made it to the Divisional Round of the playoffs in the 2024 season before being defeated by the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.
In the fallout of that campaign, Stafford was given the opportunity to leave.
He was still under contract with the Rams, but he and his agent were told they could speak to other teams to get a feel for his potential value. The noise around a split between the quarterback and the team he won a Super Bowl with grew louder, before abruptly flipping almost 180 degrees.
Seemingly out of nowhere, Stafford agreed to a renegotiated contract with the Rams, and just like that, any rumor of him leaving was snuffed.
When asked about the situation and how things have been since, Sean McVay said:
“There is no question in my mind that he and I are closer than ever. There’s a lot of appreciation, there’s a lot of gratitude that we were able to work through some of those things.”
McVay continued to speak glowingly of his quarterback, stating:
“We have a chance with him every time he’s at the switch. Love working with him, and I think he can play as long as he wants, but fortunately, I’m hoping it’s a couple more years.”

The Rams will be hoping to win another one during Stafford’s remaining years, and Les Snead emphasised that on the Rich Eisen Show this week.
The Rams have two first-round draft picks in the 2026 NFL draft, picks they may utilize to add star power to an already talented roster.
Rams’ Additions Could Spell Another Playoff Run in 2025
The LA Rams made some major changes during the off-season, namely at wide receiver. Cooper Kupp’s time with the Rams came to an end, signing with the Seattle Seahawks, while LA brought in Davante Adams to replace him.
Second-round draft pick Terrance Ferguson adds an athletic option at tight end, and fourth-round running back Jarquez Hunter will further solidify an already impressive run game.
While the Rams traded out of the first round, that isn’t uncommon. They’ve only made one first-round pick in nine years, and with two first-rounders in 2026, they could potentially convince another franchise to part with some star talent.
The return of Jalen Ramsey has been rumored, with the All-Pro cornerback wanting out of Miami. That will be one to watch, among other talented playmakers, perhaps available in a trade.
