The Rams have been one of the NFL’s most active teams this offseason, and they might not be done yet. Could they be looking to reunite with a familiar face? A trade for a one-time All-Pro may be just around the corner — and head coach Sean McVay isn’t denying it.
Will Jalen Ramsey Return to Los Angeles?
The Rams’ defense took a noticeable step back in 2024, and despite Cobie Durant’s steady presence, the unit lacked a lockdown corner. Darious Williams allowed a 101.7 passer rating in coverage last season. At 32, it’s fair to wonder how much gas is left in the tank. That’s where Jalen Ramsey comes in.
Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton recently speculated about the possibility of a reunion between the Rams and Ramsey, who spent four seasons in L.A. and helped them win a Super Bowl.
“When asked about the possibility of trading for Ramsey, Rams head coach Sean McVay said, ‘Those conversations are ongoing’,” Moton wrote. “Having played with the Rams between 2019 and 2022, Ramsey is familiar with the coaching staff, and he’s still a high-level starter.”
McVay didn’t dismiss the possibility when asked on “Mad Dog Sports Radio” — in fact, he sounded like a coach who’s weighing his options carefully.
“There are a lot of layers when you’re talking about a player of his caliber,” McVay said. “The contract, the compensation that they would be looking for … those conversations are ongoing. We’re never going to shy away from opportunities to increase the competitiveness of our roster.”
It’s clear Los Angeles wants to stay aggressive. After finishing 10-7 last year and pushing the Lions in a Wild Card loss, the Rams are reloading rather than rebuilding. Ramsey, who’s still just 30, could be the next step in that plan.
Financially, the Move Makes Sense
The Dolphins and Ramsey mutually agreed to explore trade options earlier this offseason, per general manager Chris Grier. While there was speculation he could be moved during the NFL Draft, Miami opted to wait — likely for cap reasons.
If the Dolphins trade Ramsey after June 1, they can spread his $72.3 million contract across two seasons, saving $5.9 million this year. That cap relief could be key in facilitating a deal.
From a performance standpoint, Ramsey still brings value. He played in all 17 regular-season games for the Dolphins in 2024, logging 60 tackles, one sack, and two interceptions. He’s not the same player he was during his All-Pro years, but he remains a quality starter.
Could a Reunion Actually Happen?
The Rams traded Ramsey to Miami after the 2022 season in exchange for a third-round pick and tight end Hunter Long. Two years later, the fit still makes sense.
Los Angeles has the cap space to absorb at least part of Ramsey’s deal. And while most free-agent cornerback options are off the board, a mid-offseason trade gives them a chance to upgrade before training camp.
It’s not a done deal yet, but the interest is real — and the Rams aren’t hiding it.
