The Los Angeles Rams are leaving sunny and warm Southern California to head to the frozen tundra of the Windy City as they face the Chicago Bears. With temperatures expected to drop into the teens, the wind chill will make it feel like it’s below zero, with snow expected. That weather could mean that both teams’ kickers get a lot of work.
Why Does the Rams Kicker Harrison Mevis Have Such an Unusual Nickname?
The freezing cold temperatures have increased the focus on the kickers for both the Rams and the Bears. Typically, the Rams wouldn’t be expected to have any kind of advantage playing in conditions they aren’t familiar with, but their kicker might have a slight edge, as indicated by his nickname.
Los Angeles’ kicker, Harrison Mevis, has only been with the team a short time but he has already made an impact. Part of the attention Mevis has gotten has come from his success on the field, but also for his nickname, “The Thiccer Kicker.” But where did he get that unusual moniker?
The Rams had a solid start to the 2025 season, but their kicking game was one of their biggest weaknesses. Their former kicker, Joshua Karty, was consistently missing field goals and even extra points.
While head coach Sean McVay didn’t cite Karty’s misses as the reason why the team chose to part ways with him after bringing Mevis on board, those misses are hard to ignore. Karty missed 8 out of his 41 attempts in 2025, which ranked him near the bottom of the league in kick conversion rate.
They knew if they wanted to make a serious postseason run, they would have to replace Karty. So far, Mevis hasn’t disappointed. He has made 12 out of his 13 attempted field goals and all 39 extra points. But where did he get his nickname?
Mevis played for the University of Missouri prior to joining the NFL in 2024 as an undrafted rookie free agent, and he said it was a fellow teammate who gave him his odd moniker. Former Tigers punter Grant McKinniss gets the credit for “Thiccer Kicker.”
According to Mevis, “It had a nice ring to it. I’m a bigger guy and a kicker, so why not?”
He is a bit bigger than the average NFL kicker, who usually weighs in at about 195 pounds. Mevis stands at 6’0″ and is 245 pounds, which makes him a big “thicker.”
Having played at Missouri, Mevis is not unfamiliar with kicking in the cold and snow. He will have one of the biggest games of his career in Chicago on Sunday night and could be presented with the opportunity to help the Rams win and advance to the Super Bowl.
