Who would’ve guessed it’d be the Kansas City Chiefs sitting at the bottom of the AFC West heading into Week 4? In what looks to be the strongest division in the AFC, the West will get another good one with the Raiders vs. Chargers Monday Night Football game.

The Raiders (3-0) enter the game after a close overtime win against the Miami Dolphins. The Chargers (2-1) upset the Chiefs last weekend in Kansas City thanks to winning the turnover battle.

Both teams have looked good — and a little rough at times — but one thing in common is they have the right quarterback under center.

Two MVP candidates take center stage Monday night

Derek Carr, who’s been the butt of many jokes throughout his career, has looked like a completely new quarterback in 2021. The veteran leads the NFL in passing yards and boasts a 6:2 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He’s a large part of why the Raiders are atop the division along with the Denver Broncos.

There’s no question Carr is currently in the MVP hunt. While that might be irrelevant this early into the season, it goes to show he’s got the Raiders’ offense humming. On the opposite sideline, Los Angeles’ Justin Herbert is slingin’ it, too — he currently ranks fourth in the NFL in passing yards with 956. Like Carr, Herbert has thrown for 6 touchdowns but has a slightly higher completion rate at 69.8%.

Herbert’s numbers across the board don’t necessarily push him into the MVP conversation. However, the second-year QB out of Oregon helped do what no one’s ever done: beat Patrick Mahomes at home in September.

Can either offense find consistent success on the ground?

The Raiders are undefeated, but that’s not thanks to their rushing attack. While Las Vegas’ offense sits atop the NFL with 471 yards per game, they average just 91.3 on the ground, the eighth-worst in the league. But the Chargers aren’t much better. Although they rank ninth in yards per game with 394.7, Los Angeles has the seventh-worst rushing attack, averaging 87.3 yards a game.

Injuries have hampered the Raiders’ backfield, and the loss of Josh Jacobs has been especially noticeable. However, Peyton Barber was able to find success against a porous Miami Dolphins defense in Week 3. On the Chargers’ side, Austin Ekeler and the rest of the L.A. backfield have played second fiddle to the clubs’ aerial attack through the first three weeks.

Raiders vs. Chargers prediction

Points should be expected in the Week 4 Raiders vs. Chargers matchup. With early-season bragging rights on the line, Herbert and the Chargers offense won’t want to give the Raiders a two-game lead in the division. If Jacobs is healthy enough this week, he could provide Las Vegas’ offense with more balance. But right now, the Chargers have more to lose.

Prediction: Chargers 32, Raiders 27
