ESPN reported on Tuesday that legendary New England Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick will not make the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a 2026 inductee.
While that shocked the sports world and led to many monumental figures voicing their displeasure, it also has real implications for other former coaches who should end up in Canton one day.
There is only one coach finalist each year for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and with Belichick not making it this year as the finalist, it means everyone else on the list will have to wait an additional year as well.

After news broke about Belichick missing out on being a 2026 inductee to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, criticism mounted over what many called a flawed voting system. Attention has since shifted to how the decision could affect other legendary head coaches.
Belichick is widely believed to have been passed over this year because of the Patriots’ cheating scandals during his tenure. But delaying his induction also pushes back the timeline for other coaches.
Best-selling author and former Denver Broncos receiver and tight end Nate Jackson noted on X that another aspect of Belichick’s Hall of Fame snub is the limit of one coach inducted per year.
“Another crappy thing about the Bill Belichick HOF snub: Correct me if I’m wrong, guys, but they only put in one coach per year, right?” Jackson said on Wednesday. “So now Mike Shanahan will likely have to wait ANOTHER YEAR to get in. Shanny should have had his gold jacket years ago. It’s all bulls**t.”
According to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Coach Blue-Ribbon Committee meets each November to select one coach finalist for that year’s class. This year’s finalist was Bill Belichick, who joined a group that also included senior category finalists Ken Anderson, Roger Craig, and L.C. Greenwood, along with contributor finalist Robert Kraft.
From that pool, between one and three finalists are chosen for induction. With Belichick not selected, he returns to the list of coaches eligible for next year’s class, with the expectation that he will again be the finalist.
Belichick’s delayed induction means other legendary coaches must also wait, with no guarantee a stronger candidate won’t emerge in the meantime. That leaves other coaches — including two-time Super Bowl winners Shanahan and Tom Coughlin, as well as last year’s finalist Mike Holmgren — waiting at least another year for consideration.
