Hunter Renfrow thought his NFL career was over just months ago. The receiver battled ulcerative colitis throughout 2024, missing an entire season and wondering if he’d ever play again.
But when the Carolina Panthers desperately needed help at receiver, they knew exactly who to call. The only problem? Renfrow’s daughter had hijacked his phone for cartoon time, and no NFL emergency was going to interrupt Bluey.
How Did Bluey Block the Panthers From Reaching Hunter Renfrow?
When the Panthers released Renfrow during final roster cuts, they told him they wanted to keep the conversation going. That urgency only grew when Adam Thielen was traded and Jalen Coker landed on injured reserve, leaving the Panthers thin at receiver.
General manager Dan Morgan and head coach Dave Canales repeatedly called Renfrow, but their calls went straight to voicemail.

As Renfrow later explained, he wasn’t ignoring them. His daughter had taken over his phone to watch cartoons, declining every incoming call to keep her show running.
“I had like 10 missed phone calls from Dan, Dave, my agent, and they’re all just ignored,” Renfrow said with a laugh, via the Panthers’ official site. “My daughter’s watching Bluey or something. So I got back in the car and had that conversation, I guess.”
That lighthearted story masked the serious decisions Renfrow had been weighing. At 29, the former Pro Bowler had missed all of 2024 while battling ulcerative colitis. An article by PFSN’s Shristi Chanderia reported that the illness left him unsure if his career would continue.
Why Did Renfrow Choose the Panthers Over Other Offers?
Coming back required both physical readiness and family support, especially with his wife expecting another child. Renfrow explained that his parents taught him the value of honoring commitments, which made his return to the Panthers more than just a personal choice but a family one.
The timing created urgency for both sides. With Coker sidelined and Thielen gone, the Panthers needed a reliable slot option to join first-rounders Tetairoa McMillan and Xavier Legette. Canales acknowledged the situation’s importance when he told reporters, “Couldn’t be a better opportunity, right now, based on the situation we’re in.”

While other teams had reached out with offers, Renfrow remained unmoved. Joe Person of The Athletic shared his firm stance on X: “Hunter Renfrow says he had other offers. But he was either going to play for the Panthers or not at all.”
That commitment made the reunion swift once the cartoon crisis ended. What began as a missed flurry of calls thanks to a Bluey binge turned into a quick agreement. Renfrow was back on the practice field by Monday, preparing for game action after wondering if his playing days were finished.
His story highlights the unpredictability of NFL careers and the simple family moments that shape them. Sometimes, the biggest decisions in professional sports are delayed by the smallest, most human interruptions.
