The Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini scandal continues to dominate headlines even after the 2026 NFL Draft got underway on Thursday. Accusations of a long-term relationship with the former NFL insider have gone mainstream after many photographs surfaced showed the pair together across multiple years.
One of the big questions about this controversy is where the bombshell photos originated. There has been plenty of speculation that a private investigator was hired (potentially by a spouse), but now new details seem to poke holes in that theory.
Patriots HC Mike Vrabel’s Compromising Photos May Have Been Taken By an Amateur
On April 7, Page Six published photos of the Patriots head coach and Russini sharing a few intimate moments at an Arizona resort, located two hours from where the annual NFL owners meetings took place. Initially, Russini and Vrabel categorically denied the assertions, with the Patriots head coach calling them “laughable.”
Additional photos of the pair surfaced on Thursday, including some from six years ago, showing a close setting and even a kiss. When the original photos were released, many speculated that someone hired a private investigator to track down the duo.
However, as new information comes to light about how the New York Post obtained the photos, it sounds as if they may have been the work of an amateur. They were initially shopped to TMZ, who turned them down because they didn’t identify Russini.
“I am told a woman provided these photographs to TMZ and they did not name Dianna Russini,” Torre said.
“They did name Mike Vrabel, though,” added David Samson, the former president of the Miami Marlins and Torre’s guest.
“They did identify the NFL head coach with a woman who’s not his wife, I am told,” Torre responded. “And the price requested was indeed four figures, and TMZ — to their shame, I think in retrospect — they weren’t super interested. But by the time they figured out that the other woman… was in fact Dianna Russini a day or so later, the tipster in question, I am told, had seemingly already made a deal with the New York Post.”
Torre argues that this is evidence that the photographs likely weren’t from a private investigator.
“If you were a private investigator who was hired by one of their spouses, which is a common rumor in this story — and I have no proof, by the way, that that is the case, would that be how you weaponized these photos?” Torre asked.
Samson replied, “When you find something, and you want to monetize it, the biggest thing you have to do is understand the value of what you found. And so the person who took the photos is moronic because how do you not find out who both parties are? You don’t stop at just the NFL head coach; you have to find out because if that woman is monetizable, you have lost that ability if you sell it before you have done the work. It is a poor job of monetizing the photos because once you have both parties that are recognizable, it makes the scandal larger and more interesting to a more diverse group of people, which is a higher price.”
This was Torre’s point.
“What does that say to you about the possibility then that this was taken by a private investigator?” Torre asked.
“The private investigator would have had information already,” Samson said.
Torre then shared his theory: “I want to introduce a different possibility, which is another guest who’s like, ‘Oh, there’s that giant guy I know from watching America’s most famous television show, the NFL.’ I’m going to Google his wife. I’m going to find that she has blonde hair. I’m going to look at the woman, who turned out to be Dianna Russini and say, ‘That’s not his wife. They’re interlocking fingers. I think I got something.’ What does this run for on the open market? Who can I give this to?’ That’s how they get to TMZ and the Post and are guessing, like, [can I get] $5,000?'”
We may never find out the source of the photos, but Torre makes a good point that the additional details are starting to make it seem less likely that a PI was used.
Russini recently resigned from The Athletic before her contract was set to expire in June, and she deactivated her X account.
Vrabel announced he would miss the final day of the NFL Draft to undergo counseling. According to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Vrabel did nothing that falls under the league’s purview regarding punishment.
How the story continues to unravel remains to be seen.
