Several New England Patriots legends are pushing back on the dominant narrative around the Mike Vrabel–Dianna Russini scandal.
While most coverage has framed this scandal as a destabilizing distraction thanks to the tabloid fallout and Vrabel’s absence on Day 3 of the NFL Draft, Rodney Harrison and Vince Wilfork are making a different bet: that the fallout could actually bring New England’s locker room closer together.
Rodney Harrison Sees Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini Scandal As Locker-Room Catalyst
Harrison’s perspective stands out from the speculations. “The one saving grace, no matter what goes on in your life, has always been an NFL locker room,” Harrison told MassLive.
“Those players are going through some of the same things Mike Vrabel is going through… So they have a great deal of empathy. So I think they’ll understand, and they’ll forgive Mike. I think it’ll bring the locker room even closer together.”
Players don’t need their coach to be flawless. They need him to be accountable and consistent, and Harrison believes Vrabel has already taken the first step.
“He’s been humbled. But he’s hungry. He’s even hungrier now,” Harrison said. “He knows he has a lot of stuff to prove to those guys in the locker room.”
Vrabel acknowledged his actions and emphasized repairing trust with his team.
Harrison believes that the Patriots’ players will stand by their coach. If Vrabel’s first year in charge is any indication, then they should be able to weather the storm.
And there is evidence inside the building that aligns with Harrison’s view. Several players have already publicly backed Vrabel — from veterans like Christian Gonzalez to franchise QB Drake Maye. At a time like this, when the sharks are circling to pounce on any little leak, it brings some stability.
Patriots Legend Vince Wilfork Also Backs Vrabel
Wilfork took it a step further, connecting the moment to franchise history.
“After Spygate, we were on a mission as a team… ‘Eff everybody!’ We were on a mission to show everybody we were the real deal,” Wilfork said via MassLive. “This could be a huge turning point on the football side.”
That comparison isn’t perfect because of the different eras and different stakes. But the underlying mechanism is familiar. External pressure can either splinter a roster or sharpen its identity. Harrison and Wilfork are betting on the latter because they’ve lived it.

After Spygate, the Patriots ripped off an 18-0 run before falling in the Super Bowl. Then came Deflategate, when Tom Brady turned the fallout into a scorched-earth campaign, leading New England to another Super Bowl title after serving his four-game suspension to open the season.
What’s been underexplored is how Vrabel fits into that equation as a coach. His credibility was built on toughness and accountability.
The scandal challenges that image, but it also creates a chance to reinforce it if players see genuine ownership behind the words. There’s risk here. Harrison acknowledged “a few” players may remain skeptical.
But that’s part of the repercussion of his actions that he must brace for.
