The storm has yet to die down for New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and reporter Dianna Russini. Following their alleged romantic scandal, which has been in the making for the last six years, both NFL figures’ lives have been altered, and one Patriots legend weighed in on the broader effects of the controversy.
Mike Vrabel, Dianna Russini Scandal Could Carry Over to Locker Room, Says Devin McCourty
Reputational damage has been the overarching theme of the Vrabel-Russini scandal. While the reporter resigned from The Athletic amid an ongoing standards review, the head coach has attended counseling.
Devin McCourty, who spent his entire 13-year career in New England, spoke about the controversy’s implications on NBC’s “Pro Football Talk.”
“As some older guys in that locker room, who are maybe married with kids, you have a different understanding and experience of life in, ‘Hey, man, we’re all living a journey. He’s going through what he’s going through. I’m not judging — I’m here to work,’ But I think it’s different when you’re younger,” McCourty said about the players in the Patriots’ locker room.”
Vrabel first earned coaching respect when he took the Tennessee Titans to the AFC Championship in 2019. He drove them to the postseason for three straight years before a pair of down campaigns resulted in his firing after 2023.
“I think younger guys, when you come into situations, you have this thing where you put people on pedestals, or you think of somebody a certain way, and you don’t want that to be tarnished,” McCourty added. “So I think they’re gonna have to navigate that. I think there are gonna be some of those young guys who are in that locker room, talk about, ‘Hey, man, this is shocking. This is disappointing. How do I get past?”
Ultimately, off-field drama shouldn’t dictate on-field action. After taking the Patriots to the Super Bowl for the first time in seven years, Vrabel proved his coaching mettle, and players can buy into that.

“They don’t fully understand that this is a job,” McCourty said. “You’re here to do a job. And I think that’s what they’re gonna have to figure out, and the best way is, hopefully, you don’t have anything else come from this story… But right now, in this kinda dead period, they’re in the eye of the storm… Nothing else is more exciting to talk about, other than, ‘What’s the latest in this whole saga?’ That’s what everyone wants to talk about.”
Vrabel was recently seen buying his wife an apology gift in Salt Lake City, pointing to efforts to fix his marriage. However, how the rest of his story plays out ahead of the new season remains to be seen.
