Christian Gonzalez Gives Honest Thoughts on Negotiations with Patriots

After successful college stints at Colorado and Oregon, Gonzalez was drafted by the Patriots with the 17th overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The rookie contract he signed was a four-year contract worth $15,102,868.

In three seasons since then, Gonzalez has played in 34 regular-season games. He’s accrued three interceptions, 24 passes defended, one fumble recovery, one sack, 145 tackles, three tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits.

In PFSN’s NFL Cornerback Impact Metric (CBi), Gonzalez ranked as the 12th-best corner in the 2025 regular season with an impact score of 85.7 and a letter grade of B.

According to Spotrac, one of the Patriots’ notable offseason moves is that they need to make an option decision on Gonzalez. Since the option is a club option, it is up to the Patriots whether to add another year to his contract, which would keep him under contract until the end of the 2027 season.

Currently, Sauce Gardner for the Indianapolis Colts is the highest-paid cornerback in the league, with a total contract value of $120,000,000 and an average annual salary of $30,100,000. However, NFL rumors predict that Gonzalez will tie for the second-largest cornerback contract with Jaycee Horn, with the Patriots’ cornerback reportedly projected to sign a $100,000,000 deal this offseason.

Recently, we’ve seen athletes and teams argue over their worth, most recently with Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys, which led to the star edge being traded to the Green Bay Packers. Gonzales says he doesn’t plan on going anywhere and will let his agent handle contract negotiations. Patriots insider Mark Daniels posted the following:

“Christian Gonzalez said he’ll let his agents handle the talk about his contract. ‘This is where I got drafted. I don’t want to be anywhere else.'”

If the Patriots want to make it to another Super Bowl, it would be in their best interest to extend one of the best cornerbacks in the game.
