The connection between Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce has been the bedrock of the Kansas City Chiefs’ dynasty. Giving a young quarterback an immediately elite weapon, the two have become one of the most terrifying duos to stare across the field from. Together, they have reached truly historic status, with their two-man game among the most lethal weapons in NFL history.
But their combined success has also meant unparalleled individual accolades for both players. When they faced the Washington Commanders in Week 8, it was one such occasion. The 28-7 victory for Kansas City also included a major milestone for the veteran tight end. As a result, after the game, the superstar quarterback had a heartfelt gesture for his long-standing partner in crime.
Patrick Mahomes Gushes Over Travis Kelce’s Milestone
After it seemed like he had regressed further from an underwhelming 2024 campaign, the 10-time Pro Bowler seems to have found his footing in recent weeks. As the offense for the Chiefs has turned electric, Kelce has been involved in the thick of things.
As he’s steadily improved his numbers, Week 8 proved to be his best game of the year, with 99 receiving yards and a touchdown for his efforts. It was that catch for a score that was a historic moment in and of itself.
The touchdown score was the 83rd of Kelce’s regular-season career, all of which he’s spent in Kansas City. That number tied the mark set by Priest Holmes for the most in franchise history. It was also the 100th touchdown of his career, when including the postseason.
As he spoke about the win, the two-time MVP had some high praise for the player with the most career postseason receptions at 178.
“That’s the true Chief of Chiefs. He’s the guy that was here before me, set the culture. He’s the guy that’s in the building early, in the buildng late, and he’s the leader of this team,” Mahomes said.

A third-round draft pick for the Chiefs in 2013, Kelce was on his way to a historic career even before Mahomes joined the fray. But once he had the right quarterback behind him, the individual excellence from the three-time Super Bowl champion manifested into team success.
However, it was clear when he chose to return for another go-around this year that the tight end wasn’t satisfied just yet. As it turns out, neither was Mahomes, who finished his message with, “To be able to get record tying, let’s go out there and break it now.”
