One of the more intriguing veterans fighting for a roster spot in Dallas just suffered a setback, which might be significant.
Why Was Parris Campbell Helped Off the Field at Training Camp?
Training camp was already heating up in California when the Cowboys faced their first injury scare of the summer. The concern centers on one of their most contested positions, as wide receiver Parris Campbell had to be helped off the field on Saturday after suffering an apparent leg injury during practice.
According to Cowboys insider Jon Machota, Campbell “was being helped off the field with an apparent leg injury,” and eyewitnesses at the scene said he was in visible pain.
A photo later posted by DallasCowboys.com’s Tommy Yarrish showed Campbell leaning on KaVontae Turpin and a team staffer, with Dak Prescott nearby offering support.

Campbell was taken to the evaluation tent, but the team has released no further details about the severity of the injury.
Will Parris Campbell’s Injury Shake Up the Cowboys’ WR Room?
The timing couldn’t be worse for Campbell, who joined the Cowboys this offseason after stints with three other NFL teams. He spent the 2024-25 season with the Philadelphia Eagles, appearing in five games and catching six passes for 30 yards and a touchdown en route to a Super Bowl ring.
Before that, he was with the New York Giants in 2023-24 and the Indianapolis Colts from 2019 to 2022.
Now entering his seventh NFL season, the 6’0″, 208-pound receiver was already battling long odds to crack Dallas’ final 53-man roster. CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens are locked in as the team’s top two wideouts, while Jalen Tolbert, Turpin, and Jonathan Mingo appear to be trending toward roster spots.
That left Campbell competing in a crowded field for one of the remaining receiver positions. Several other players are also vying for those final spots on the depth chart. However, Campbell’s veteran experience could have been valuable to a team with many new faces on the roster and coaching staff.
Unfortunately, that experience might not matter if the leg injury proves severe enough to sideline him for an extended period.
The Cowboys have little margin for error in 2025-26. After a 2024-25 season derailed by injuries, staying healthy is the one thing Mike McCarthy’s reshaped coaching staff can’t afford to mess up. Campbell’s injury may not move the needle for Dallas’ season on its own, but it’s an early reminder that depth can disappear fast in this league.
For now, all eyes turn to Campbell’s diagnosis and recovery timeline. If the leg issue keeps him out for an extended stretch, Dallas may have to explore additional veteran help or fast-track one of their younger prospects into a larger role earlier than planned.
