Carolina Panthers Pursuing Trade for $21,000,000 Havoc-Wreaking All-Pro, Reveals NFL Insider

In 2024, the Carolina Panthers had one of the worst defenses in the NFL. Trading for this superstar pass rusher would immediately upgrade their defense.

Everything changed for the Carolina Panthers’ defense the moment news broke about Nic Scourton. One of their top hopes for a quick turnaround on a historically bad unit just suffered a collapsed lung, leaving the team scrambling to patch a pass rush already riddled with questions. With Bobby Brown III, Tershawn Wharton, Tre-von Moehrig, and Patrick Jones II in free agency, plus a defense that ranked at the bottom almost everywhere in 2024, this is no simple fix.

Now, fans and front office alike are asking: can Carolina actually pull off a blockbuster move to save their 2024-25 campaign?

Why Would the Panthers Want Trey Hendrickson for This Defense?

The Panthers allowed 31.4 points per game and gave up 6,877 total yards during the 2024-25 campaign. They ranked near the bottom in passing defense, giving up 4,043 yards, and finished 18th against the run with 3,057 rushing yards allowed. With only 36 sacks, it was clear they couldn’t get to the quarterback nearly enough.

After losing key defensive line pieces to free agency, Carolina tried to address things in the draft by selecting edge rushers Scourton and Princely Umanmielen, and safety Lathan Ransom. But hopes for a quick rebuild took a hit when Scourton suffered a collapsed lung during a joint practice with the Houston Texans. Initially mistaken for a heat-related illness, the true nature of the injury only came out later.

With Scourton sidelined, Carolina finds itself suddenly thin at edge rusher. That’s why the Panthers are reportedly interested in Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson, who’s been in training camp but is unhappy about his contract situation.

Hendrickson has been trying to hammer out a new deal with the Bengals for months, asking for a multi-year contract worth $30 million plus per year. But the Bengals haven’t budged, and now, not only is Hendrickson frustrated, but teams across the league, especially those needing help on defense, are paying attention.

NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reports that multiple teams, including one within the Bengals’ own division, are interested in trading for Hendrickson.

How Realistically Could Trey Hendrickson Land in Carolina?

Whether Carolina can actually land Hendrickson is another story. The Panthers have all their draft picks for 2026, giving them flexibility. But it’s anyone’s guess which impact player the Panthers could put up in a deal big enough to convince the Bengals to let go of their star pass rusher.

Still, the fit is obvious. Hendrickson can transform a defensive line instantly, forcing rivals to account for him every play. Double-teams, extra blockers, and constant game planning would come with him, meaning his presence alone changes how offenses attack the Panthers.

If Hendrickson joins Carolina, the team gains instant credibility in the pass rush. His last four years with Cincinnati have been dominant, with four straight Pro Bowl appearances, 57 sacks, including a league-leading 17.5 in 2024, 155 tackles, 11 forced fumbles, and a dozen passes defended.

Hendrickson would be a major addition for any roster, and Carolina making a move for him would definitely shake up the league. Still, one player probably isn’t enough to fix all of the Panthers’ issues from their struggles in the 2024-25 campaign.
