The Green Bay Packers finally gave their quarterback what Aaron Rodgers had been demanding for years. They drafted wide receiver Matthew Golden in the first round, pairing him with Jayden Reed to create the kind of explosive receiving duo that could transform Jordan Love into an elite passer.
With Josh Jacobs pounding between the tackles and Matt LeFleur’s creative play-calling, the Packers have assembled all the pieces for a dynamic offense. But there’s one question hanging over Lambeau Field:Â which receiver becomes Love’s go-to target?
Who Will Emerge as the Packers’ True Number One Receiver?
The battle isn’t playing out like most position competitions. Instead of creating tension, Reed and Golden seem determined to lift each other rather than tear each other down.
Now in his third season, Reed was quoted by Fox Sports’ Henry McKenna praising his new teammate: “What he got, you can’t teach. He’s a really good football player. He’s fast. Can’t teach that, man. He’s smooth in his routes. You can’t teach that. That work you put in, day in, day out — he showed that.”
Golden’s response shows the same team-first mentality. “It’s just been nothing but work since I touched foot here,” Golden said. “So, man, I’m excited for being here, [with] the coaches and the players that we have here. I’m just looking forward to what’s in front of me.”
This mutual respect might be exactly what the Packers need, but it doesn’t answer who gets the most targets when the games matter.
Heading into Week 2 of the 2025 NFL season, the Packers’ WR depth chart looks like this:
- WR1: Jayden Reed
- WR2: Matthew Golden
- WR3: Romeo Doubs
- WR4: Dontayvion Wicks
- WR5: Savion Williams
What Makes Matthew Golden Special?
Golden brings game-breaking speed that can flip a game in one play. The Texas transfer was a human highlight reel during his lone season with the Longhorns, hauling 58 passes for 987 yards with nine touchdowns while averaging 61.7 yards per game in 2024.
His biggest weapon is the ability to take the top off any defense. Whether he’s stretching a zone coverage or simply outrunning man coverage, Golden gives the Packers the deep threat they’ve been missing. That kind of vertical speed is exactly what could turn their offense into something explosive in the 2025-26 season.

However, talent alone doesn’t guarantee immediate success. Golden is still a rookie, so he’ll face the growing pains of adjusting to the professional level. Communication with Love will need time to develop, and even getting used to the speed of NFL defenses takes most receivers months to master.
Even Jerry Rice struggled initially, catching only 49 of his 98 targets with Joe Montana during his 1985 rookie season. If the greatest receiver in NFL history needed time to adjust, Golden should get the same patience.
How Does Jayden Reed’s Experience Factor In?
Reed enters his third season with a solid foundation already in place. Over two seasons, he’s posted 119 receptions on 169 targets for 1,650 yards and 14 touchdowns, which shows both production and reliability.
More importantly, Reed has already built chemistry with Love. That established rapport will likely make him the quarterback’s first instinct when looking downfield, especially in crucial situations where trust matters most.
Reed’s concern centers on his health. He’s dealing with a Jones fracture in his foot, an injury that can be tricky to manage throughout a long season. If the foot doesn’t heal properly or gets aggravated during games, his effectiveness and availability could become major questions as the season progresses.
Packers vs. Commanders Week 2 Preview
Daniels and the Commanders will take on the Green Bay Packers to kick off Week 2 of the 2025 NFL season. Both teams won their season openers, and this matchup could play a pivotal role in playoff seeding.
The Packers and Commanders each have a young star quarterback, and both squads view themselves as legitimate Super Bowl contenders.
It’s fair to say that Jordan Love and the Packers looked like one of the most impressive teams in Week 1, which is why they enter as favorites against Washington.
With Micah Parsons spearheading their defense, the Packers are expected to handle business. Still, Daniels, as he has done many times before, has another chance to silence the doubters and lead his team to a statement win.
