Packers Legend Mocks Cowboys for Allowing Trevon Diggs To Join Green Bay for Super Bowl Run

Packers legend takes a shot at the Cowboys for letting Trevon Diggs walk, as Green Bay eyes a Super Bowl run with the star DB in place

The Dallas Cowboys didn’t even wait until the end of the season to cut ties with former star CB Trevon Diggs. The former interceptions leader reportedly rubbed plenty of people the wrong way, and his decision not to return to Dallas with the team during the Holidays was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

LeRoy Butler Raves About Trevon Diggs’ Acquisition

The Green Bay Packers hope they can get back on track with him. However, even if he hasn’t been as good in recent years, Packers Hall of Famer LeRoy Butler is ecstatic to have him. Talking on Kay Adams’ “Up & Adams” show, Butler gushed about Diggs’ ball skills, adding that he might be the missing piece for Jeff Hafley’s defense.

“Thank you, Cowboys,” Butler jokingly said. “If you think about Diggs, ball skills-wise, nobody’s better in the last, three, four, five years. The guy is amazing. Our problem in the secondary — we can’t catch.”

Butler believes that he brings a different profile of defensive back to the table. Given his ability to create turnovers, he thinks it wouldn’t be crazy to start him on Saturday’s Wild Card matchup with the Chicago Bears: “We have nothing like him,” Butler continued. “He was an All-Pro a few years ago and just needs some reset, and we’re gonna give it to him. And yes, he can start. He turns the whole game around.”

Diggs played 33 snaps in the regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings. He logged a couple of tackles in his first taste of action with his new team. Still, while the Packers have struggled with subpar cornerback play for most of the season, it’s been a while since Diggs was a reliable option.

His PFSN CB Impact Metric of 60.6 ranked 123rd in the league this season. And even though he missed most of the campaign with a mysterious concussion and a knee injury, he didn’t record a single interception.

In eight games with the Cowboys (six starts), Diggs gave up 17 catches on 22 targets for a 77.3 percent catch rate. He also gave up 270 receiving yards, four touchdowns, and the opposing quarterback had a passer rating of 153.2 when targeting him, the worst mark of his career.

He has six total interceptions since leading the league with 11 in 2021, and with his history of injuries, a hot temper, and steep salary, it’s also easy to understand why the Cowboys chose to part ways with him.

If Diggs can even recapture a fraction of that 2021 ball-hawking magic, the Packers’ gamble could flip from risky to season-defining in a hurry.
