The Green Bay Packers find themselves in a challenging position ahead of the 2026 season amid concerns about Micah Parsons’ health. The team is set to compete in a loaded NFC North and will need all the help it can get. Luckily, there’s a solution to the Parsons problem.
Arik Armstead Floated as Option For Packers Amid Micah Parsons’ Injury Recovery
The Packers need Parsons to lead a strong defense in 2026; however, with the star set to miss at least the start of the season, the front office must consider alternatives. They already have Zaire Franklin and Lukas Van Ness to lead their defense, but another impactful player would be very helpful before Parsons returns from injury.
Enter — Jacksonville Jaguars defensive lineman Arik Armstead. Armstead is a seasoned veteran with plenty of playoff experience from his days serving on the vaunted San Francisco 49ers defense. Following his prime years, he moved to Jacksonville, signing a three-year, $43.5 million deal in 2024, and has served as a staple on their defensive line for the last two years.
Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay linked Armstead with a move to Green Bay, connecting the dots between the veteran’s contract and the Packers’ needs.
“With June 1 now in the rear-view, it’s relatively surprising that Arik Armstead is still on the Jacksonville Jaguars’ roster,” he wrote. “Armstead is one of the more obvious potential salary cap casualties in the NFL right now. With the cash-strapped Jaguars lacking cap room and Armstead having no guaranteed money left on his contract, the team could clear up nearly $15 million (and only incur a shade under $5 million in dead money) by releasing the veteran defensive lineman.”
Armstead probably only has a couple more years left in the NFL at most. Nonetheless, he’ll be making the most of those years by playing in a solid defense with loads of talent. Beyond Franklin and Van Ness, they have safety Xavier McKinney and cornerback Keisean Nixon holding down the fort at the back.
“If Armstead does get released, there will likely be several teams clamoring for his services,” Kay added. “The Green Bay Packers have been looking to get over the playoff hump after several fruitless trips and could benefit mightily from a grizzled veteran like Armstead joining their side. The Pack have a talented but young defensive line, one that could use a mentor and part-time rotational piece like Armstead to push them.”

The veteran logged a 78.8 PFSN DT Impact score in 2025, ranking 27th in the league, demonstrating an ability to still have a strong impact on defense.
Whether Parsons’ health truly necessitates pursuing a player like Armstead remains to be seen.
