Where Do the Two Teams Stand Entering Week 4?
The Green Bay Packers looked like an NFC juggernaut through the season’s first two weeks. But they still have some truly abysmal performances, highlighted by their effort against the 0-2 Cleveland Browns with Joe Flacco as the starting quarterback.
Leading 10-0, the sky fell on the Packers in quick succession, as they gave up 13 points in under four minutes. Giving up four sacks and throwing an interception wasn’t a strong showing from Jordan Love, whose slow start has flown under the radar of Green Bay’s excellent defense.
If the Packers’ stumble was surprising, the Cowboys’ Week 3 letdown was alarming. Both teams had been penciled in as NFC contenders early on, but just as Green Bay unraveled in Cleveland, Dallas fell apart in Chicago.
Going against a Bears team that gave up 21 points to J.J. McCarthy in a quarter and had Detroit drop 52 on it last week, the Cowboys could not manage more than 14 points on the night.
The offense turned the ball over four times and found no consistency. Simultaneously, their defense had no answers for Caleb Williams’s career night, as the Bears dominated en route to a 31-14 victory. Dallas’ biggest loss was the injury to CeeDee Lamb, which took him out of the game in the first quarter.
With their offense showing cracks, the Cowboys won’t get much breathing room on Sunday as they prepare for Parsons’ return. The star edge rusher has recorded one and a half sacks and eight quarterback pressures over the last two games, and his presence alone raises the stakes even higher.
Owner Jerry Jones, however, chose not to organize a formal tribute for Parsons’ return, which added a layer of tension to the week. Parsons downplayed the snub publicly, though he intended to let his play speak for itself.
“There’s a lot of things I could consider disrespectful throughout this process, but I wouldn’t say the tribute is one of them. I think maybe there’s hard feelings for them, but for me, I’m happy where I’m at. And we’ve got a really good football team. I guess I can review my tribute on a win,” he said.
Dallas’s offense needs to rediscover its rhythm, the defense must reassert itself, and the team as a whole has to prove that Week 3 was a stumble rather than the start of a downward spiral. Whether Parsons’ return galvanizes them or the distractions linger could set the tone for the rest of the season.
