It seemed like Terrion Arnold’s promising NFL career was coming to an abrupt end. After being charged in a kidnapping and robbery case, the Detroit Lions parted ways with the former first-round pick.
However, the Seattle Seahawks decided to give him another opportunity despite the serious allegations surrounding him. Now, general manager John Schneider is facing backlash for defending the team’s controversial new signing.
Defending Terrion Arnold Lands John Schneider in Hot Waters
The allegations against Arnold stem from an incident involving three men who he allegedly believed had stolen $100,000 from him. He was subsequently charged with eight felonies, including kidnapping and armed robbery.
With the Seahawks’ decision to sign him drawing scrutiny, Schneider was asked about Arnold during his media availability. Rather than distance the organization from the controversy, the Seahawks GM defended the cornerback and explained why the team believed he was worth the risk.
“The character just didn’t really fit with the allegations and everybody we’ve talked to. But yes, this is a long-term play. It’s not a let’s see how quickly we can get this done and let’s get him in the building and see how it goes.”

Schneider also explained that Arnold could not practice immediately but would be able to attend meetings and train with the team. His defense of the signing, however, quickly drew criticism from fans. One fan outright asked, “Are you out of your mind? Ridiculous take really.”

Another fan argued that the number and severity of the charges were difficult to overlook. “Got to take a great defense to have Arnold innocent.”

The backlash was also fueled by the Lions’ decision to move on from Arnold. Detroit selected him in the first round and spent two seasons developing him before ultimately parting ways with the cornerback.

Another fan directly criticized Schneider’s defense of Arnold, writing, “So it wasn’t actually him that committed those crimes? Got it. I’m glad my GM would never go for this [expletive].”
The Seahawks are now betting that Arnold can turn his career around in Seattle. The former first-round pick has plenty of talent, and the team could benefit from his upside in the secondary.
Still, the allegations surrounding Arnold will continue to put the Seahawks under a microscope. Schneider’s decision to publicly defend the signing has only intensified the scrutiny surrounding Seattle’s controversial gamble.
