What Happened to Omarr Norman-Lott?

On a third and three for the Seahawks, a run play caused a pile-up of bodies near the line of scrimmage. Norman-Lott stayed down injured on the play and exited tonight’s game against the Seahawks.

Norman-Lott came out of the pile shaken up and has been taken to the sideline to be examined by the medical team. He walked gingerly but under his own power to the sideline.

He has been dealing with an ankle injury throughout training camp. Seeing him go down holding his ankle is unfortunate news for the Chiefs, as a potential reaggravation would hurt their defensive line depth greatly.

Norman-Lott is questionable to return in tonight’s preseason contest because of the ankle injury he sustained during tonight’s play. Even if he does not return tonight, keeping him out of the game for precautionary reasons could benefit Kansas City.

It’s unfortunate for Norman-Lott, who was frustrated when leaving the field, to have an ankle problem again. Making the NFL jump is never easy, but the preseason helps ease that transition. Losing the opportunity for reps against an NFL offense will sting, but his health will be more important for the Chiefs in a long NFL season.

The Chiefs spent a second-round pick on Norman-Lott and expect him to play a big part on their defense. Norman-Lott played a vital role in the defensive line that helped the Tennessee Volunteers into the College Football Playoff. In his final two seasons in college, he tallied 44 tackles and 9.5 sacks for the Volunteers.

The Chiefs need Norman-Lott to stay healthy as they need depth behind All-Pro DT Chris Jones and Mike Pennel. Especially if they run into a rematch against the Eagles, they’ll need Norman-Lott to provide reinforcements in the trenches where the reigning Super Bowl champions often dominate their foes.

The Chiefs are vying to make the Super Bowl for the fourth season in a row. The offense has Patrick Mahomes and plenty of weapons, including the return of Rashee Rice, so they will be fine, despite their struggles in last year’s Super Bowl.

The Chiefs’ defense struggled in the Super Bowl, too, so the defense will have to improve if they want to add another Lombardi to their trophy cabinet.
