Ilia Malinin endured a surprising setback in the men’s singles figure skating event after entering as one of the favorites for gold. Known as the “Quad God” for his technical arsenal, Malinin had strengthened his medal case with a standout role in Team USA’s gold-medal performance earlier in the Games.
However, in the men’s free skate, two falls and additional errors proved costly, earning him a 156.33 and leaving him eighth overall, outside medal contention. The result drew mixed reactions, though among those offering public support was Mikaela Shiffrin, who has previously addressed the pressures of Olympic competition.

Following the event, a post shared by ISU Figure Skating’s Instagram handle highlighted Malinin congratulating and hugging Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan, who won the gold medal, praising the American’s sportsmanship and competitive spirit.
Under the same post, the 108-time World Cup winner shared a heartfelt message of support, emphasizing the courage and vulnerability required to compete at the Olympic level.
“The Olympics ask us to take a real risk on the world stage. One that requires courage and vulnerability to erroneous judgment and narratives built on a limited understanding of what the sport truly demands. We love deeply because we know loss. We feel the pain of defeat because we’ve tasted triumph. Heartbreak and victory live right next door. Disappointment and gratitude often co-exist,” she wrote.

Shiffrin’s words recognized Malinin’s immense talent while reminding fans and fellow athletes that results do not define an athlete’s worth. She concluded with a personal note of encouragement, making it clear that Malinin had the backing of the sporting community: “Ilia, we’ve got your back. 🙌 Proud of you. ❤️”

After a disappointing showing in the men’s free skate program where multiple costly errors took him out of medal contention, the 21-year-old admitted he was caught off guard by how the performance unfolded in his post-skate reaction.
“I was honestly not expecting that. Going into this competition, I was so ready. I just felt ready getting on that ice. I think maybe that might be the reason. Maybe I was too confident that it was going to go well,” he said in an interview with NBC, explaining that he had felt fully prepared heading into the event.
“It’s not like any other competition. It’s really different..I mean I was preparing the whole season. I felt so confident with my program, so [confident] with everything, and just go out, [and] that happen, I have no words honestly,” acknowledging that he was still processing the result.
